Job Completion/Job Closing

That is my question along with why are they working on a job when the
job packet has been turned in for three weeks. I was told it was
because they either "find" parts or something that they thought was
scrap actually wasn't.

Thanks for all the replies.

We close jobs as soon as possible after completion. If your job is
completed
and you have transferred all parts to inventory, where is the additional
time and parts coming from?

We have always completed the job, put the parts to inventory and then
held the job for a month before closing it. But recently we have been
having additional time charged to a completed job and additional parts
to go to inventory. But if they are put to inventory at this time it
will only include labor and burden.
We are wondering when others complete/close jobs. We are thinking of
doing both at the same time so nothing can be charged to the job once
the parts are received to inventory. We are on 5.1 and do not
backflush
or auto receive.
Any suggestions?

Hi Jeni,

The advice we got from our Epicor consultant was
to establish the practice that manufacturing would
mark a job "Complete" when all the work was done,
but that Cost Accounting would close the job when
all the costs were finally known.

We have jobs which wait a while for the subcontract
costs to be known.

As we have gotten better with the establishment of
planned costs for subcontract operations, our lag
time has been less and less.

For me, the best practice would be to do the upfront
work to make sure that all the costs accumulate to
the job as it moves along, and then, after the job
is received to stock, there should be no further changes.

In repetitive manufacturing situations, the longer
old jobs stay open, the more likely it is that work from
a new job will be charged erroneously to an old job for
the same part number.

This, I gotta tell ya, leads to furrows in yer brow.

Maybe you should poke around some and find out why the
costs can't be established as the job progresses so that
the job could be closed on receipt to stock.

If you don't close the job in the same month you ship it, (or prior) (we
ship from the job, not stock) then the costs can 'hang'. All
transactions need to be in the same wip capture period, so be sure to
backdate inventory transactions, stock tickets, etc and job completions
and mark them complete in the capture period. We pull lists on the first
of the month and run around and bug everyone to do their job and then
backdate the job complete to the last day of the month. If the job
complete transaction is done in the next period then the costs go to COS
not WIP and affect your inventory numbers etc.

Hope this makes some sense.
