Job Type Project

Looking to see if anyone who has/is using the Project Module can answer a general question for me that I have not been able to find in documentation.

Does the system treat Project Jobs any different than other Job Types? I’m thinking about MRP, Scheduling, financially…?

As far as MRP, parts, scheduling, and the operations side of things I’ve never SEEN it treat Project Jobs differently from Manufacturing, Maintenance or Service jobs, and the MRP and Scheduling Technical Reference Manuals don’t mention “job type” as a component in their logic.

The finance side probably has other dependencies tied to Project Billing, so that might be an area to explore.

Thanks @Ernie ! Appreciate the input. I came to the same conclusion with my investigating, but I have never USED the module.

We’re just now trialing Project Jobs and will start using them next year to manage CapEx. We ran into a few issues where reports like Work in Process treats project jobs the same as manufacturing jobs and we had to create a custom style for that report to take out projects. Project Billing GL Controls handle all of the financial aspect otherwise.

Project jobs do not have demand links, as the parts aren’t meant to be received to inventory. Since they have no demand, there are no suggestions. The prod qty is 0. So you have a material which is just a place holder for the part number, then you issue whatever you want to it. Be it buy direct to the job, or issue from inventory. But none of it is demand driven, it’s pushed into the project job. So MRP basically will have nothing to do with the project job.

That being said, you can have manufacturing jobs that are linked to the project for the purpose of being rolled up in cost analysis. In that case, those job run through the system normally, they are just picked up in the job analysis. But those aren’t specifically Project jobs when you look at the job type, they are manufacturing jobs that happened to have a project added into the project field.
