Gail,

We are setting up parts in the warehouse, for examples fasteners and
weld nuts, to be stocked in the warehouse in boxes of 1000 each. We
establish minimum levels in Vantage to trigger reordering of parts.
Jobs may require 50 to several thousand at a time. We issue a "bench
stock" amount, say a box of 1,000 to the weld department and put it into
a "weld department" warehouse. We know that somewhere between 50 to a
thousand will be in the weld shop at any one time, and not necessarily
for an immediate job. When they run the job the data entry causes the
back-flush, which relieves inventory and adds costs to the job. As the
inventory goes down it will trigger the reorder to purchasing. As our
main warehouse is shown on the part master as the primary warehouse,
then the inventory should always be relieved from that warehouse, while
the weld department warehouse inventory should always be at 1,000. When
the weld shop needs more weld nuts, they will get them out of the
warehouse 1000 at a time. Since these items are not very expensive, we
will adjust our inventory through cycle counting of the 1000 piece
boxes.

We may not be doing everything right, but the jobs get their parts and
costs, inventory is relieved and monitored through cycle counting by the
main warehouse and purchasing knows when to reorder.

We have looked into a Kan Ban system (by which I assume you mean - taking materials to the floor to be consumed "as needed" instead of picking them for each job). The key feature in Vantage for this is called "Backflushing". You set a part to be "backflushed", and then you make a new warehouse BIN on the floor with the parts you need. The pick list still shows the part, if it is attemped to pick the part Vantage will warn you that it is a backflush part. Once the job closes (I think), then Vantage updates ("backflushes") the BIN location for the parts according to what the job called for.

That's about all I know. Help screens in Vantage give most of this info, and Vantage help gave the rest. "That's ALL I know about That"

Back flush will relieve the material when the associated operation is
completed. You don't have to wait until the job is complete.

Also, with Kan Ban you can setup minimum onhand quantities you want to
retain for those cases when you Kan Ban inventoried items.

Backflush works great for issuing inventoried materials as they are used. I
don't know how it can be used for job material. Also, are we talking about
a "true" Kan-Ban? In other words, issuing materials in like amounts just
like someone was taking a Kan-Ban "container" of a specific amount parts,
which will then cause a requirement for another Kan-Ban "container's" worth
of parts to be re-ordered? I don't know if there's an easy way to do that
in Vantage.
