Label printing

Some very basic labels I have designed in Crystal.

Increasingly however, I'm finding that we are receiving customer specific
labeling requirements. While Crystal shines as a reporting tool I've found it
to be lacking in functionality as a label maker.

I use LabelView to create all my custom labels. As a side note, instead of
accessing the Progress DB via ODBC, I link the label to the Vantage .dbf's in
the c:\vntgwork folder.

How are all of you creating your labels (designing). Can you print labels
from Vantage by designing them in Crystal?

Thanks,

Dave Cole

Thumbs up for Zebra.

We are using Zebra 105Se 200 Dpi thermal label printer for more than three
years. We print about 750 labels a day. So far no problems at all. It works
well with network printing too. We paid about $1500.00 for it.

I agree with Todd. The better Zebra's are built like tanks! We use the 105Se
and haven't had any mechanical problems. Just make sure you clean the print
head's OFTEN!

You may also want to check out the following web site:

Good source for label type software/hardware.

Go with Zebra.

They have several product lines. The better units are built like tanks ---
approx $ 1,400 - $ 1,600 ... and worth it.

Try SystemID Warehouse - www.systemid.com <http://www.systemid.com>

Once you figure out what model you are interested - also price www.cdw.com
<http://www.cdw.com> - Prices on web pages are for reference only - you can
almost always get better prices online with a sales rep.

I'd suggest starting with a Zebra 105SE ...

Note the Stripe units are the lower grade of Zebra's. Given that your
shipping dept likes to use these printers for frisbees I'd stay with the
105SE style boxes.

SystemID also sells scanners etc ... good outfit when you are looking for
bar code stuff.

Good Luck

Our Shipping Dept. has now trashed 4 $500.00 Label printers in a
year. Before I go shopping, I had a few questions. Regarding sheet
fed printers, how do you keep from wasting labels. If your labels are
4 to a page, for example, and you only need one? I'd rather do sheet
fed (I can always rob from another department in an emergency), but I
am also looking at the Zebra line of label printers. Any comments?

Thanks - Les
