Labor Entry - when the system goes down

Sure…If I can bar code fields within MES…I’d like to continue that same scheme if Epicor were to go down, into a text file…or excel if that works. My guys can continue scanning their travelers (hopefully we were smart enough to print them ahead of time) and producing parts, as IT scrambles to fix Epicor.

True…but I’m looking at a dire situation where everything has failed….then what do you do?
Most companies would have their guys fill out a form that would have to entered manually into Epicor…I’m looking to automate this whole process without the need for paper.

Any thoughts?

Not sure how many systems you have to support and what type of work is being performed., but for what it's worth we are thinking about just getting consumer grade UPS devices for the workstations. The backbone and servers are already on battery back-up so.

I'm sure we are not the only company that deals with power issues, from rain storms to wind storms, etc. When this happens sometimes our computer systems will go down.

We are looking to automate the entering of labor entry records when our MES stations go down. One is being able to capture this data, then being able to enter the records into Epicor.

Is this something Service Connect would be able to do?

What are other companies doing to handle this situation?

We are currently on 9.05.607B looking to upgrade to 9.05.701

TIA, Manasa

If it's really that dire then conceivably what tech would you even have available to you? That would drive how it needs to be recorded. If your intent is that a computer is available, but no network connectivity, then maybe a program that takes in an excel sheet (used while the power is out) and then processes it into Epicor like DMT would either be through webservices, service connect, or the BOs maybe?

Not sure if I'm missing something, but how would you automate the process with no power? If you have no power and it was a "dire situation", I would think production would halt, too. If you are able to somehow perform operations without power and in dire circumstances then I cannot think of any other way to record labor other than paper-and-pen and subsequently manually entering them in after the power has been restored.

I guess you could have a laptop issued to the shop floor on a rolling cart of some sort that could be used to record labor in Excel and then doing "something" with the Excel spreadsheet afterwards.

I am certain I won't encounter this problem… No power? No production. No pay. Built into the union contract. It's mutually beneficial due to safety concerns, too. I can't imagine OSHA condoning employees roaming around and working in a powerless and dark shop.

OK, think of it this way…my Epicor system is down…I have power so my machines are still running. No, Vic, people are not running around in the dark!

I was just wondering how people were handling it now if Epicor were to go down, how people record their labor times without using paper.

It sounds like it is just pen and paper!

Not specific to Labor Entry but we've built an application that interacts
with Epicor in an Offline Mode. It lets you record (in our case CRM Calls)
at any time (connection or not) and when connectivity is available it
Synchronizes it Epicor. We keep a local copy of our Customer Table as well
as our Contat Table within the Application. So the Sales Rep can enter a
call , select the customer andthe contact and when connectivity its
restored the call is entered into Epicor using the WEb Services.

I assume somethng like this could be in place, in which you keep an up to
date offline copy of your "Released" jobs and your Workers can "Start" End
activity on your app while there is connectivity everytiing works live, if
connectivity is lost a local copy is stored in the Laptop and when
Connectivity is Restored it syncs automatically.

Thank you! That was what I was wondering....

And it is good to know we can come up with something for the Sales People....it will be needed since our guys are all over the place!

I just wanted to know that we were going in the right direction!

OK, think of it this way…my Epicor system is down…I have power so my machines are still running. No, Vic, people are not running around in the dark!

I was just wondering how people were handling it now if Epicor were to go down, how people record their labor times without using paper.

It sounds like it is just pen and paper!

True…but I’m looking at a dire situation where everything has failed….then what do you do?
Most companies would have their guys fill out a form that would have to entered manually into Epicor…I’m looking to automate this whole process without the need for paper.

Any thoughts?

I would use paper forms (people tend to be more comfortable with them rather than creating say an excel form that looks nothing like Labor Entry or MES that they would then have to be trained on to properly use - and it is something they might never use so the added value of that I strongly question) & do a mass entry of activity when Vantage came back up (and - before that - resolve why, if I have enough power to run equipment & provide a safe/lit work environment, I can't keep my servers & network up and running?!?!).
Â
Not my 1st choice but if you insist on a temp electronic layer of some sort, you could set up emergency forms in excel as someone suggested and use that as the basis for a mass entry when Vantage is back up - and that MIGHT lend itself to a custom SC solution (or paste insert into labor entry for each user/payroll date - or use bar code fonts to then print & scan in the 'missed' labor entries).
Â
Of the 3 (using an excel form), I'd go with the bar coded printed forms & scan them in rather than invest in coding an SC solution (that might never get used).
Â
Even a 400-700 labor entries a day to 'catch up on' can be entered in a few hours/day by one person (even from hand written/filled out forms if they are designed to make re-entry easy: One employee/clock ID per sheet & then just a running list of start/end times/dates with job, opnum, resource ID if the OP is capability based, qty, NC qty (& reason), scrap qty (& reason).

You could use Excel, then a service connect workflow to process labor entries and job adjustments. We have this method for our field employees and shops that do not have MES terminals.

Spread Sheet or any other way you record data for time sheets when systems are down, or no MES terminal. As long as it can be put into some type of format that Service Connect can read, it can update labor entry and job adjustments in mass. We use Service Connect constantly to automate processes.

Labor Entry
Job Adjustments
GL Entries
Budget Updates
Part Entry (New Part, Rev)
PLM
CRM Integration
Quote Creation
Project Creation
Customer Entry
Etc…
