Maintenance Survey

The cost to go to Vista 6.0 from Vantage should be almost nothing. From what Ive seen the interface is exactly the same, so no training required and there should be no data conversion as it run on Progress. It all appears to be a forerunner to Sonoma where they just turn off some modules and give it a different name.

For those of us that went with Vantage because the old Vista didnt have ABOM, then we could definitely save some money.

Stick with Vantage, in the long run you will not beat up your company as

So you want to do a data conversion from Vantage to Vista and retrain
everyone on Vista, then migrate to Sonoma which will use Vantages database
that you started with, to save a few thousand on your maintenance costs? How
much do you plan on spending on the conversions, training, procedures? Call
your account rep at Epicor, I think you will find they will be more than
willing to work with you on a maintenance contract that makes sense.

I agree that the maintainance is and has been expensive, but after going to
the Perspecitives conference I believe that over the last year and the year
ahead Epicor is putting a significant amount of development dollars into the
core product (versus new modules you need to buy). I think maintainance is
a necessary evil to keep a product useful and up-to-date.

I think a company is dooming its software to failure by not doing upgrades.
At that time it takes a lot more money to buy and implement a new package

Just my 2 cents but in my experience dropping maintenance is not a good idea
unless you are planning to migrate to another product within a couple years,
at most. Once upon a time I was hired by a company that had dropped maint
for an MRP system called MANMAN and gotten themselves into a real bind.
They seriously needed a new computer (VAX 11/780 would not cut it) and newer
models came with newer version of VMS which demanded newer version of DBMS
database. Without schema changes for new DB from ASK Software they were up
a creek. They ended up paying back support for several years and still
ended up migrating to another system many thousands of dollars later.

It is all too easy to get backed into a technology upgrade corner. For
example Win-98 will no longer be supported after January and Win-NT Server
will have a limited life span so migrating to Win2K or Win-XP will be
required. But Vantage 4.0 (or Progress 9.0B) won't run on Win2K (so I was
told anyway) so you would need to be up to Vantage 5.x something.
Maintenance seems like a lot but carefully consider the consequences down
the road and other technology and processing power demands change.

Also, with the changes coming in Vantage 6.0 and Sonoma carefully consider
what enabling technology you may be foregoing by freezing Vantage where you
are now.

Work with your account manager, perhaps on payment alternatives if cash flow
is an issue. But IMHO do whatever you can to remain maintained.

My past experience with other companies (which seemed to be an industry
standard) was a requirement to pay support for all years since it was
dropped and sometimes an additional reinstatement "fee" (ok, penalty) of 10%
of the back support. If enough time has elapsed it is sometimes cheaper to
buy the system again (ouch!).

I believe the only way you can obtain 5.2 is to renew your maintenance
agreement and I believe I can give you at least a ballpark number for that
cost. Your accrued maintenance cost should be approximately 15% of the
total suggested retail price (SRP) for all of the modules used by your
company, for each year that your maintenance has been lapsed. Depending
when you dropped the maintenance in 1998, you should obviously expect a
charge between 60% and 75% of the total SRP. As Todd indicated below, you
should contact your customer account manager regarding your options.
Alternatively, you may want to contact Matthew Christus at Epicor for more
information regarding the SRP's and your maintenance costs.

I recently attended a trade show and discovered that Epicor is about
to release Vista 6.0. From what I saw and from the brochure it's
Vantage with one or two modules removed. We looked at Vista but it
didn't have multi-level BOM, so we went with Vantage, but now it
has everything we need. Vista is sold here by a reseller, so I asked
them if we could down grade to Vista. They said they would check, but
haven't got back to me yet.

Does any one know anything about this as it could save us about 40-
50% on our maintenance.

Jack

From what I learned at our users group meeting, all Epicor products (vista,
vantage, dataflow, avante, etc.) are going to be combined into vantage on
release 7.0 code name Sonoma. It sounded like when that happens, the other
products won't exist anymore...

My understanding from Perspectives (subject to correction for sure) was that
there would still be distinct products with the same names as now but that
they would all be running a common core architecture largely based on
Vantage. There would still be unique business rules for each product to
serve a market segment and different front end (screens) but all would br
based on Progress OpenEdge (and most often Progress DB) with front end
developed with Visual Studio.NET. The other products will be seperate but
"sons of Vantage". At least, that's what I got from the "futures" sessions.
I expect that there will be a lot more explaining to be done by Epicor down
the road and probably a webinar or two.

We only talked about it briefly at the users group meeting, so maybe my
understanding is way off - that's definitely possible. The Epicor rep that
was there didn't even seem to know exactly what was going to be happening,
but he did specifically say that all features from all products would be
combined into the vantage product so they would not lose functionality when
they became vantage - that's where I got that from. Sounds like we need
Epicor clarification on this one...

Vista 6.0 is the first version of Vista to run on Progress. The reason
Epicor is doing this is because they are combining all their
manufacturing applications into one , called Sonoma (which is really
Vantage 7.0!) due out in about 2 years. This product will be running on
the Windows.net platform, while still using the Progress database.
I believe Avante is also being ported to Progress.

Thanks Sarah for this information, however I still don't have an answer to my question. From what I understand, with the release of 6.0, Vista and Vantage will be from the same core as will be the case with Sonoma.
So can we reduce our maintenance costs if the Vista version does everything we need?

Stick with Vantage, in the long run you will not beat up your company as
much.
