I have converted several times from 4.0 to 5.2. One set of
instructions said run idxbuild. I run it before the 5.0 to 5.1
conversion. If I forget to run it 5.1 won't start sometimes.

I am finally making the big jump - I am going from 4.0 to 6.1. - I am
going to make the plunge the weekend before Thanksgiving.,

Any suggestions? How many people are actually on 6.1? Any Major Bugs?
Problems? I am installing on test server first then go live on a new
server. I plan on running all of the conversions on my test server then
have 6.1 only on the new server.

Good luck. Some thoughts....is that a support weekend? I definitely would not attempt without tech support being available at least on the Saturday. Since you have converted on the test server already any OS compatibility issues should be gone (like MDAC version that bit me on 4.0-5.0 conversion). If you have the test conversion times available incoporate them into a details checklist. Be sure to include plenty of backups along the way so you never have to go back very far to restart. I also copied all the backup.1 files along the way to a seperate PC so I would have the whole string of them for later reference. Run some sample reports at each stage so that if something messes up you know which version it happened at, like a WIP/COS report and some aging reports. Could be weeks later you discover something odd. We did and the reports sure helped. I assume you know about all the RB reports having to be changed and keeping modified Crystal in a "safe" location. There are some field name changes that can mess up reports - like all the "our"Qty additions and the new field JobType (in case you named a formula as this anywhere - RB will crash - must rename on 4.0 system then convert).

And I thought 4.0 - 5.2 in one weekend was bad enough!

I'm going from 4.0 to 5.2 because it takes a weekend to convert the
data (700M). We will go the rest of the way to 6.1 later.
I run IDX build between 5.0 and 5.1 or 5.1 and 5.2. If I don't I have
problems with 5.2.

Dina
I'll chime in with my experiences. I jumped from 4.0 to 6.0 in a
weekend. A 2.7 GB database conversion had me up 41 out of 48 hours to
complete. I had my test server running for a month on 6.0 with ALL of my
users attached for experimentation. I advised them ahead of time to do
everything they would do in a days work on the new system. With this I was
able to be assured that all of the report and form conversions had gone
well.
My new Vantage server is a dual 2.4 GHz with 4 GB of ram on WIN2k. RAID
5 array because I'm not going to be down because I lost a hard drive
regarless of what Epicor recommends. Make sure you load test you new version
with a full number of users before you go live. Their calc's tables are way
wrong !!! I had Epicor on the phone the day I went live because only 45 of
my 80 users could log in before we were out of licenses. I would contact
Epicor ahead of time and get them to tell you how many users and servers to
set up in PET for your server.
Also they told me that If I had done my conversions on a singular hard
disk instead of a RAID 5 it would have been much faster. You only have to do
the IDXBuild between 4.5 and 5.0, not after that.
Be prepared to do full registry edits to REMOVE ALL prevoius versions of
Vantage and reinstall of the new version on machines that print a lot. I had
to do this immediately to my shipping manager before he threw the monitor
out onto the shop floor. Followed by purchasing, accounting and then
gradually thoughtout the company. FUN FUN FUN. I will end with by database
has had ZERO down time since the upgrade Aug 4.

Russ,
Just a note from someone that converted a similar size database.
The conversions from 4 to 5 is rough. After that, it is all down hill. If
I remember our 800 meg Db took around 8 hours for the total conversion from
5.0 to 6.0. I can't speak for the 6.1 conversion though.

Russ,

I previously (when 5.2 just came out) I did a conversaion fro 4.0 - 5.2
on a test database - I did not run indexing then - is this a mandatory
step? I quickly looked thru my instructions I did not see this
mentioned? When I was at prespectives - I was in the Administering V6
class and they did mention to do this but actually do you do this?
