Mapping the Data Dictionary

How is this project going? Do you still need others to be involved?
I've got a strong interest in getting to know my way around and would
be interested in helping (if you still need people).

Hi everyone,

With the changes in the table structure in 8.03 (from 6.1) one of the
challenges for users, and especially report writers, is getting to know
the new table layout. A few of us in the New England Vantage User's
Group have talked about splitting up the task of mapping the data
dictionary and making a poster size version of it. Here's the deal:

We need 10 volunteers who each could do a section, and we'd
try to break up the job into relatively equal size segments. These
would be customer tables, part, vendors/purchasing,
quote/opportunity/sales order, job processing, accounting etc.

We'd have to decide on a uniform format for this, so we can
piece them all together to make one master document, and once we have
it, I have a 54" color printer so I could print up the maps for each
person who worked on the project.

If others would like copies, I can come up with a price to cover costs,
and we can figure out how to sell them and/or how the profits would go.

For whatever reason, Epicor doesn't want to tackle this, however we all
think it would be a great service to the user community.

Please let me know if you're interested in helping with the project.
Anyone with experience doing this for other systems would be appreciated
for their input - especially if there's a good piece of software that
could help with this.

Thanks.

You do realize you'll be trying to capture a moving target with over 680
tables (Version 8.00.811C) and over 6800 fields (guessing at least 10
per table) at this point in time. Sounds like fun, count me in :-).

Here are a couple of things that need to be decide

1) Do all the maps need to come from Version 8.03? I'm not sure
which numbers represent a schema change, the 8 or the 03?

2) Are you planning on just representing tables, fields and
indexes or do you want the map to show the actual links that can be
established table to table? I would guess that this last part would
make one single document unreadable.

3) Not only file type but diagram formatting needs to be spelled
out. I would suggest using MS Visio, its readily available, easy to
learn and it has a database mapping template with standard tables,
columns, indexes, primary keys etc.

Just a few thoughts

Mark
