Michael,

I would love to see the code for this.

Thanks

Not saying what we have would suit your company, but we were given a 5.2
demo and it didn't satisfy my finance directors project profit tracking
requirements so I was set the task of automating 'something'.

We have big projects that run for many months / years, we usually have a job
for each line on the sales order line and a project ends up with < 20 jobs.
These jobs get progressively made and shipped and they want to keep track of
the margin from start to completion.

So, I wrote some 4GL that :-

o Prompts for the project number
o Creates a temporary table with one record for each job in the project
(from JobHead)
o Query JobProd (jointed to temp-table via Job) to get the order number /
line if available
o Query OrderDtl (joined to temp-table via Order/Line) to get Price*Qty, we
call this the SalesBudget
o Query PartTran (joined to temp-table via Job) and get PUR-MTL, PUR-SUB,
MFG-CUS, STK-CUS, etc, etc
o Query LaborDtl (joined to temp-table via Job) and get Hrs * Rate
o Query PODetail / PORel (joined to temp-table via Job) and work out value
of POs against the job that are yet to be received
o Puts a summary on the screen
o Dumps the temp-table to a CSV file
o Opens an Excel file
o Auto_Open Macro in the XLS does some formatting, combines a few columns
from the CSV together, saves as XLS and leaves open.

All this takes about 5 minutes on our quick PCs (PartTran and PORel are slow
to process).

Had this going for a couple of months and the next enhancement is that some
of our jobs are not linked to a sales order and go through inventory and as
a consequence the PartTran records are not associated with a job but with an
order.

If this would suit you I am happy to send you the 4GL and macro.

Project roles up dollars on Orders, Jobs, and POs based on several things.

From Vantage Help
>· Quoted: Manufactured, Burden, or Labor costs that were quoted to the
customer.
> (Quote information only includes information that is linked to sales
orders.)
>
>· Estimated: Manufactured, Burden, or Labor quantities times estimated
unit costs.
>
>· Actual: Manufactured, Burden, or Labor costs that have actually been
incurred by the company.
>
>· Earned: Manufactured, Burden, or Labor quantities that have been
completed times the estimated unit cost.

All this stuff is calculated on the fly when you look at Project Tracker. If
anyone knows how to get at the data or create the equivalent in 4gl, I would
love to see it.

Rich,

We have considered that piece of the puzzle to some degree but probably need
to look at it some more.

Are you determining percentage of completion based on input methods (e.g.,
contract costs, engineering estimates, or direct labor hours) or based on
output methods (e.g., pre-determined milestones or units produced)?

Scott

OK, here's another one for debit heads out there in Vantageland, especially
any working at a capital equipment manufacturer.

Is any company using the percentage of completion method for recognizing
revenues and costs? If so, would you please share how you have implemented
this accounting method with respect to Vantage? Thanks in advance.

contract vs. percentage of completion

>
>
>

Rich

Rich,

We have considered that piece of the puzzle to some degree but probably need
to look at it some more.

Are you determining percentage of completion based on input methods (e.g.,
contract costs, engineering estimates, or direct labor hours) or based on
output methods (e.g., pre-determined milestones or units produced)?

Regards,
