MES Handheld

We working on handheld device. Are there specific use cases or workflows where handheld MES (RDP-based) is still required instead of using the browser-based MES in Epicor Kinetic?

For example, is this typically driven by high-volume barcode scanning requirements, hardware limitations, or certain MES/Data Collection transactions that are not yet available in the browser-based interface?

The classic handheld doesn’t launch from the web.

We moved away from the classic handheld / rdp setup because it was causing a number of issues with the connectivity and links between the user, device, rdp instance, etc.

The mobile warehouse application (andriod app) is capable of doing everything that MES / Data Collection can do. It’s down to a matter of workflow and preference.

Are you talking about classic handheld or EKW by BISCIT the Android.

If you’re looking at EKW check out our docs site: docs.biscit.com

If you have any questions about EKW let me know!

The old RDP based hand held version hasn’t been maintained in years. Using the new Kinetic based MES on a small handheld could be interesting but EKW may be a better option to look into for the long run.

I used it on a tablet a few years ago and it worked awesome.

We use it on tablets as well it’s works there but a cell-phone sized screen… maybe not so much.

We use this size screen in our picking dept where they pick small packages using the material queue. The team members selected this size at our last round of device review.

We use larger 10" tablets for fork trucks and other team members who want a larger size.

Our use case for handhelds for when we originally implemented the application was material movements and inventory scanning. We use mobile warehouse specifically to pick orders using advanced material management (material queue) and have them available to all our fork trucks to do inventory moves with via scanning.

We want to standardize MES on affordable Windows-based Microsoft Surface tablets because it fits their existing IT/security environment and keeps the solution simple, cheaper, and easier to manage.

Want feedback like:

  • Are there any risks?
  • Any missing considerations?
  • Any technical concerns?
  • Will MES work properly this way?
  • Any barcode scanning limitations?
  • Durability on shop floor?

That’s what we do. Don’t see any more risks than them having any other kind of access to the system. Other than damage to the tablet (we’ve had a few get dropped even with Otter Boxes the screen is fragile). Keep a spare or two on hand and plan to replace a few each year.

If you can get them a keyboard I’d highly suggest it. We went keyboard-less and it’s painful when they have to enter text/number by hand.

Kinetic MES (Data Collection) will work via Surface tablet or other Windows based tablets. (Probably iPads, Android, etc too we just haven’t tested it)

We use BT barcode scanners. Like anything Bluetooth they can get disconnected so we had to train our users on how to reconnect them. The BT scanners we’ve found don’t have a huge scan range but our users are within a foot of the barcode so it hasn’t been an issue for us.
