As a complete opposite to the opinions below, we are running 5 Intermec CN3 hand helds for picking goods. They are ideal as they store person has them on their belt at any one time and the batteries last a good 8 hours before recharging.
They have a 2D barcode scanner built in which is very accurate.
They find them particularly useful for the following reasons:
If they only require to move or pick one or two items, instead of having to drag a trolley to the shelf, they just walk to the shelf and pick/move the parts.
If they need to scan the bin location of the top shelf, they can walk up the aeroplane style steps and scan the shelf ... much easier than lifting a trolley (with PC attached) up to the shelf.
I guess it goes down to planned use for them, but for stores processes our store people will go for their hand held every time instead of the clunkier tablet on a trolley option.
Terminal services works perfectly well and is really easy to use. We have ID badges with barcodes on them with the TS login name and password built into the barcode so one scan logs the user straight in.
We do however have several fixed MES terminals which are used generally for starting/stopping production activity.
In E9 there are differences between MES screens and HH screens - even though you think you are doing the same thing it will sometimes process it differently in the background.
Either way I believe you still need a licence (either Data Collection licence per device or full licence for MES).

Vic is correct, the use of wireless tablets over handhelds is a
better application of Vantage even though each tablet-user cost you a
seat. The handhelds and the Vantage implementation of them leaves
you gasping for functionality. In a cost/utility calculation, it's a
bad decision.
We have three handhelds which have never been utilized even though we
have them functional. The tablets on the other hand, are in high
demand. BTW, we use the Dell tablet.
The IT group is not a fan of the handhelds since it requires terminal
server licenses and they consider those remnants of the stone
age. We have a limited number and don't intend to get more.
