To really see the advantage here you will have to convert your DB to a larger block size and optimize the block size on the RAID. This process is time consuming and I don't recommend it on large databases unless you bring in SSD for the conversion.

However if you do not already have a virtual environment in place making this initial jump can be very costly and requires a good amount of research. Make sure you look at more than just VMWare. My experience says that VMWare chokes on Progress. Minimum dollar amount you are looking at to go virtual is $32,000, but most people will end up spending around $80,000 - $120,000 to get started with main stream solutions.

I am planning to migrate my vantage 6 to Vantage 8.409 (latest release).
I would like opinion in order to take preparation steps:
I am buying Dell poweredge 310 with Xenon 2.66,8GB of memory, four 146GB 15K RPM and windows 2003 enterprise 32-bit edition.
I have 50 data entry users and 25 shop floor pcs.
Following advice needed:
-MS SQL or Openedge?
-32 or 64 bit?
-Epicor 9 recommended with above configuration?
appreciate any other advice or post installation experience.
Thanks
Zack
I would stick some more drives in there if you can.

Agreed, more drives (more spindles = more IO Ops)

In addition:
SQL database (you still need Open Edge)
32 bit (64 bit not ready for "prime time")
E9 is a better choice to go forward with than Vantage 8. If you ever
decide to go from V8 to E9 there will be about $15K of costs to do
so. The drawback is that E9 Support is costlier than V8.
VMWare will make the installation a lot easier and flexible in the
long run. (a "must" in my book)

If you are Progress I recommend you stay with Progress. Everything I have read shows that switching to MSSQL for the DB you will take a performance hit.

For the hard drive specs I recommend the following
2 x SAS whatever is cheapest. This is to host the OS
Fill the rest of the space with 15k SAS of whatever size you can afford. As others have stated this will improve your performance

I would encourage multiple physical CPU's but the true multi core support doesn't come into play until Epicor 9.05 from my understanding. So in the case of a vantage upgrade I
would be looking at getting the fastest CPU possible, Nehalem or newer. More cores in this case will not make a big difference.

If you stay with Vantage leave the OS at Server 2003, there are problems running it on 2008.

Stay with the 32 bit progress. You will see little to no advantage if you move to 64 bit. To really see the advantage here you will have to convert your DB to a larger block size and optimize the block size on the RAID. This process is time consuming and I don't recommend it on large databases unless you bring in SSD for the conversion.

As mentioned Virtualizing can make the process easier.

Going Epicor 9 would be a significant change and I recommend you really look at the pros and cons of going that route before jumping into it.
