More 6.0/6.1 Upgrade "Difficulty"

Lydia,

We just upgraded to 6.0 over Thanksgiving, and we had problems with
98 machines not releasing the ODBC connection, but otherwise I think
they worked fine. We have since upgraded those machines to XP.

Back today to try 6.0 to 6.10. Just reading (again) the instructions and noticed in the Vantage 6.10 Client install it says to "Click Install Vista Client". Huh? I suppose I will see when (if) I get to that point if there is a Vantage option like there was in 6.0 install. Looks suspiciously like one more error to note in the install instructions in case someone else tries to upgrade.

To add insult to injury (and not related to Epicor) we had a whole building maintenance power shutdown for 3 hours this morning and my homemade NAS box (Win98 with an extra 100GB disk) where I store mid-upgrade backups won't boot. Someone mentioned awhile back about danger of long running disks stopping. I think this is the case. At least it was the boot disk and not the 100GB storage disk. Sorry, just venting a little.

OK, I give up. We are not getting to 6.10 this weekend. I will take it as a small victory that 6.0 seems to run OK. If I start now I have just enough time yet this weekend to get all the users their new mapped drive letter, install the 6.0 clients and start making all the RB and Crystal reports work. At least there are no compelling features for us in 6.10 (the so called "CRM release") so we can coast on 6.0 for awhile.

Show stopper was the previously encountered "The DLC environment variable must contain a valid directory/path (11002)" error in the data conversion. This time after 6 attempts and making sure no Progress services were running it still would not get to the schema changes. Also no words of wisdom this time in the ePortal Answerbook. I'll wait and talk to support sometime before trying to go on - next time on a support weekend if they ever schedule one.

So be forewarned - there are plenty of rough spots in the upgrade process.

Todd,

I don't know whether to call you brave or foolish for trying the
upgrade without a test, but I'm glad you managed to get to a working
position.

I totally agree with you about inaccuracies in the documents we
recieve from tech support. Epicor really needs to improve this area
of customer service.

As for the canned conversion to 6.0, I had a problem with it during
my test upgrade and tech support gave me some steps to work around it.

My error was...

cannot find or open file d:\epicor\mfgsys60\db\mfgsys.db.
error numb 2 (43)

The solution given was...

PROBLEM: For some reason, the customer is unable to use the VN 6.00
Conversion Tool to upgrade their Progress Database.

SOLUTION: The following procedure give instructions for manually
upgrading the vatnage database from VN 5.20 to VN 6.00. As always,
drive letters and pathing should be changed to reflect the customer's
installation.

1. Get everyone out of VN 5.20.
2. Stop VN 5.20 and VN 6.00 DBs in the PET.
3. Start the Proenv.
4. Change directory to the \epicor\mfgsys60\db directory.
5. Use "procopy C:\epic52\vantage\db\vantage mfgsys" command. 6.
Use "prostrct repair mfgsys" command. 7. Start VN 6.00 DB in PET.
8. Use Schema Change.MFG file to run Schema Changes. 9. Logon to VN
6.00 using Vantage.MFG as a Security Manager, then run DB
Conversions. 10. Start VN 5.20 DB in PET.


No real explanation as to why it didn't work for me, but apparently I
wasn't the first.

But anyway, I agree with you that documentation errors have cost me a
lot of time in the past also. Glad you made it to 6.0.

Feeling pretty foolish actually. Actually never made it to 6.0 so we are still running 5.20. I thought I had 6.0 working but while converting the Crystal job traveler and testing it discovered serious issues. Multiple warning messages in Job Entry about things not fitting in frames (RECTANGLE RECT-160 does not fit in parent FRAME FRAME-ProjectDetails. (6491) ) Clicking OK gets past them but eventually I get a Process Not Responding message and have to close Vantage. So I never converted the users.

But at least now I have a 6.0 test system to show people and play with once I get the crashing fixed. 6.0 and 6.1 appear to be a lot easier to setup on the same server and also run dual version from the client desktop. Now I can convert the Crystal reports in advance...also it looks like all the report builder reports will work without having to do much so that is a big task avoided.

By far the largest time consumer was the backups beforehand and between versions so I think a regular Saturday (when Support is working) will be enough time to try again rather than wait for a long weekend.

After I send my list of "questions" to Support and get some responses I'll post some of the workarounds. I wonder if the ones you listed for the 5.20 to 6.0 conversion would work for the 6.0 to 6.1 process.
