I am setting up the temporary servers but I only have the Epicor media for 8.03 and 9.05. Is there somewhere I can download the install or ISO files for 8.03.400 and 9.04? The only thing I see on EpicWeb is the patches and service packs. I believe I can install 8.03 and upgrade it to 8.03.400 but the install instructions say to install OpenEdge 10.1B which isn't on the media I have.

[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
We have been running 8.03.305 on a server that for a long time limitted our ability to upgrade. It is also the domain controller and print/file server and had limitted available space so I didn't even dare try to move to 8.03.4xx.

We now replacing our old physical servers with virtual servers. I have setup a 9.05 virtual server following Epicor's recommendations. In order to convert all our existing data to the new server will I also need to create temporary 8.03.4xx and 9.04 servers? The instructions refer to running the 8.03.40x to 9.04 conversions first but I am unsure about the 8.03.305 to 8.03.40x.

Any other recommendations would be greatly appreciated as well.

Mark
I believe you must upgrade to 8.03.409C before moving to E9.

If you have performed patch upgrades before, you will find it is not very involved.
However, the patch/upgrade instructions leave something to be desired, so I would run all the upgrade(s) on a test server first... kust to verify you have all the steps down.

803 - Current server
803.xxx - Temp VM, Latest patch. Restore current DB here. Run updates, run UOM prep and take time with it, backup DB
9.04 - Temp VM, Restore DB, Run Schema change, reboot, install 904 license, reboot, run conversions, backup DB
9.05 x32 - temp VM if upgrading to x64 server, restore db, run schema change, reboot, install 905 license, reboot, run conversion, backup DB
9.05 x64 - final live server, restore db, should be good.

Thanks for the detailed information. I hadn't even thought about the x32 to x64 change. Thank goodness for virtual servers or I would have a heck of a time.

Reason for the x32 stage is that I found it is significantly faster to do the upgrade there then move it to x64. When I did my testing before we went live it shaved 4 -6 hours off of the Schema changes/ Conversions.

[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
I can vouch for that. We've also found that running conversions/schema
changes from a separate machine drastically increases the required time.

Also, as long as you have the drive space, you can put 8.03.409C, 9.04 and
the x32 bit version of 9.05 all on the same server, there is no need to have
a different server for each one. As long as you are not running more than
one at the same time you don't need to concern yourself with the registry
edit to be able to run them.

I usually add a folder in the Epicor folder called Update. I use this for my
DB location during the updating process and make sure I change the location
of the DB in the PET for each DB in each version of OpenEdge, as well as
updating the .pf file for each version as well.

Then, when you are going through the process you only need to do a backup in
between each version instead of a backup and restore. I also tend to leave
the backups right in that folder as well so I end up with a whole set of
backups from each step. Also means you can just stop one version of openedge
and start up the next version and not have to worry about moving any files
around.

original.bkup - backup from 8.03.50x
schema.803 - backup after 8.03.50x schema change
conversions.803 - backup after 8.03.40x conversions
schema.904 - backup after 9.04.50x schema change
conversions.904 - backup after 9.04.50x conversions
schema.905 - backup after 9.05.60x schema change
conversions.905 - backup after 9.05.60x conversions

I would also suggest renaming the Proenv and Progress explorer tool to tag
the version number on the end of it when you have multiple versions on the
same machine, especially since Win 2008 adds icons to the shortcut are of
the start menu and it's annoying to click on one and end up finding it to be
the wrong version that you need.
