Mprosrv.exe "storm"

Paul

I had the same problem a few years ago with a pair of Dell Poweredge
4450's at Beverly Hills Mercedes. Believe me the were not happy when it
rebooted during the day and blew their deals out of the system. I replaced
the Ram and my problems went away. I don't know if this info helps. It's
just a little life experience.

After writing that e-mail I decided to look into the Dell angle, since my
box is a dell. I found that I am not the only one who has experienced
spontaneous reboots on PowerEdges. After reading a few minutes it seems a
mixed bag of nuts; a few bad memory, a few bad motherboards, a bunch that
got escalated to the top, etc. but no real hard reason, or explanation from
Dell.

So to sum it up, I might be looking at a couple of separate issues
manifesting themselves with possible correlation to each other. Glad it is

Wow! Now that you mention it...When I went into the server room after being
told how slow things were I noticed the Vantage server was a a log-in
screen. I never logout (room is locked) so I assume it rebooted sometime.
But I could see no traces of a reboot in the event logs. Strange. More
pressing issue at the time was the slowness. I do know the server has not
been intentionally rebooted in a long time (several months). It as 1GB but
I am not sure of the DB settings since going to 6.1. I'll have to check
that out. I know the disks are getting a little cluttered and each as only
about 1GB remaining. I'm hoping a new box for Vantage 8.0 will be here well
before they get too low. Rule of thumb I use is never more than 80% used.

Todd,

Hate to throw a "Me Too" at you, but over the past week I have had the same
issues, but on 5.2 /Win2K3. I usually have a 500Mb _mprosrv.exe, and a
bunch of lesser others. I know the size of the large one can be regulated
by adjusting the "# of DB Blocks in Buffer" setting in the Progress Explorer
Tool. I set mine to 500 because I have 1 Gb of RAM in this box. I also
found that the server has been doing some spontaneous rebooting at
night(while we're closed) and during the day. On some of those occasions I
saw complaints in the eventlog about running out of page file space, and
running low on memory. Because of this, I gave each of the three HD's its
own 2Gb page file, but still I get those reboots. My anti virus scanning
stays away from anything Vantage, and the server is pretty much a dedicated
Vantage box. Hardware is Dell PowerEdge 2600....

Hopefully this sounds like something familiar to someone out here, because I
running out of ideas... Memory leak? Faulty RAM? Who knows...

Seeing some odd things on our Vantage server unlike any before. Users
started reporting very very slow performance and interval from splash screen
to login screen is taking from 30 seconds (4 X normal) to several minutes.
Server shows very low Idel Time (2-5%) and several of the mprosrv.exe
processes are grabbing 40 to 50% of the CPU (bounces between a couple of
them) but others are very low 1-2%. Memory and disk space both look OK.

Any reason a couple of these mprosrv.exe processes would take off and go
nuts? Any solutions other than shutting down and rebooting the server?

Todd,

Seems like I remember something similar happening when I first implemented
V2i HD backup system for the servers. Some progress executable progs (might
have been the same one) took off multiple times and stayed in open
processes. I had C-drive space problems and not enough memory for the
backup software. Long time ago, but I think that's how it went. Don't know
if it helps any.

Backup Exec was done taping by then but might have been in verify phase still. Hasn't been a problem in the past. Things eventually settled down. I am suspecting that someone (or several people) were running some reports when at about the same time a particular user tried to run a very long running indirect labor summary RB report. She got impatient and started it again, and again and again because it never produced results. So several were all running at the same time all consuming resources and probably locking each other to some extent. At about the same time as the server got slower and slower people logging in got impatient when the splash screen went away and did multiple attempts to start Vantage (despite splash screen warning "WAIT - It really is starting"). So even more load. So I'm thinking it was a sort of "perfect storm" set of circumstances.

At least it finally cleared itself out without requiring a server reboot.

Thanks,
-Todd C.
