MRP and firm jobs

Hi Mitchell

Not sure which version you are on but we are on V4 and the following works
for me.
If you go to the links screen in job entry for your part number - in the
right hand top quadrant you can see all jobs for that part and you can use
the delete job button from there which will delete any unfirm job - once you
double click to "open" the job it insists you firm before deleting. You can
update live jobs from there too and reschedule which I find quicker than
working in the main job entry screen.

Hope this helps

We added a prefix to our unfirm jobs. This makes them easy to spot and
doesn't waste job numbers. But you have to firm the job before you can
delete it. This automatically assigns a firm job number which defeats what
we are trying to accomplish.

Does anyone have this problem?

Mitchell,
We have wanted to be able to assign our own job numbers ever since the beginning in MRP, but can't. Before MRP (Vantage 3.0), we would create "Allocated" jobs which would drive the requirements. These jobs had the letter "A" at the end of them. The rest of the JobNum would match the Sales Order that called for that part. That way we could look at any job and know that 1. It was an allocation job, 2. Which Sales Order it was tied to, 3. If it didn't have the "A", then it was a released job for the floor.

It wasn't too much work to delete the "A" jobs and create a new job once we were ready for a Production date, and we were sure that all of the materials would be here on time. In our manufacturing situation, we like materials to be here at least 6 weeks before the Part is due to ship so that we can safely schedule the job into production without worrying about it being late due to other factors (like late vendor shipments, longer inspections backlogs, etc).

With current MRP we are stuck with the system assigned job numbers, there is no 'clean' way to get our 6 week lead time on purchasing parts, and MRP may create batches of jobs that don't match the Sales Order Requirements on a Release by Release basis. We have to run MRP, then manually look at each job (there are hundreds) and make sure it fulfils all of the requirements without going over. Next, we assign a new Start Date for the jobs to implement the 6 week lead time, and then firm up the job (even though it is likely to change any number of times due to the customer Shipby date being changed). If we get an Engineering Order to change a BOM, then we've got to unfirm the job, delete it, and run MRP again to get the new Rev implemented. Then change the Start Date again, refirm the job, and go on. This has been very labor intensive for us, which is the opposite of what MRP is supposed to do.

The six week lead time is the biggest issue for us, since many times jobs can get hung up in WIP because of a purchased part being Short. In our current Cell Manuf. process, each Cell is instructed not to begin a job until all the parts are in stock for that job and are on the floor. Then they begin a schedule x number of assemblies per week for the duration of the job. 6 Week lead times are key for this to happen. Vantage has a lead time field for manufactured parts, but MRP does not take this into account when scheduling jobs or ordering parts. It is a dead field, essentially, when considering M Parts. If this field were implemented into MRP it would really help us out.

Any comments on your situation?

Troy

Troy,

One thing you could do would be to add a "pick" sequence as the first
operation in the job and relate the material to that sequence. If you
set up a new workcenter for the pick sequence and use a 6 week queue
time for that workcenter, the job will require the material 6 weeks
before the first operation.
