MRP Cancel - Hung

You can stop the Process and Task Appservers with no problem, however one
other thing you can do is to look at the System Monitor and see what the PID
of the MRP process is. Then you can look on your Server's Windows Task
Agent, find the same PID and manually kill it.

This will kill it, but you will need to run MRP again because it will leave
incomplete data sitting out there.

Anyone know any tricks to cancel a hung MRP?

In SysMon, even pressing the Red X doesn't do the job, it just hangs and
says "Task is being cancelled, please wait." And it never cancels.

Any other tricks that you may know of on a LIVE system to un-hang MRP
without restarting Appservers?

Thank you in advance.

You can stop and start the process and taskagent appservers without
impacting users. The couple of times I've had problems with MRP I had
to resort to forcing the thing to quit by starting up ProEnv, and
running 'asbman -kill -server MfgSys803ProcessServer'.

Alternatively, you can just kill the jave.exe process that hosts the
appserver. "netstat -aon" will show you the PID associated with
existing connections (-b will show you the program name). Look for the
process listening on port 8302 to find the MfgSys803ProcessServer PID
for example, and then you can kill it from TaskManager.

Actually I had a strange problem this morning - sometime over the
weekend it appears that an appserver crashed, and the OpenEdge
AdmSrvc.exe exited, leaving the remaining Vantage appservers in a weird
state. The production vantage appserver wasn't running and so clients
were getting connection refused errors. I restarted the Admin service
and the appservers started themselves normally, but the ProcessServers
wouldn't start as there was already a program running listening on port
8302, 8312, etc. I had to resort to finding their PIDs and killing
them, and then things started normally.

I had a similar problem a few weeks ago which I attributed to the
MSSQL transaction log filling up. I rebooted since I didn't want to
take time to diagnose the problem, but I was able to diagnose it this
morning.

Anyone see this before? I occasionally see Progress appservers crash
but only rarely and until now not something that impacts users.

I saw this on (I think) 8.03.405. It went away in 406 and 407.

BTW, just discovered a known bug in 407. Not sure if it was in previous versions, but you can't have the manager password longer the 7 characters. If you do, you will start to see a ton of DECRYPT errors in your server log and will have issues with printing reports.

I don't have a problem with an 11 character password, but and 18
character password doesn't work trying to log into the Admin tools.

Also if you're using the manager account for your system printing, I'd
recommend creating a separate "print" account with a password that never
changes that you use in your System Agent config. The account doesn't
need to be privileged at all - just needs access to all of the companies
in your system I think.
