I've had this happen a couple of times now in the past year.
- I get this error in the MSSQL server log: Error: 7884,
Severity: 20, State: 1. (Params:). The error is printed in terse mode
because there was error during formatting. Tracing, ETW, notifications
etc are skipped.
- Then Vantage reports a communication link failure and shared
memory provider error:
[11/04/05@02:23:21.979-0400] P-008408 T-001592 1 AS -- (Procedure: 'mrp
mr/MrpExp.p' Line:-1) 08S01: [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]Shared Memory
Provider: No process is on the other end of the pipe.

Client]Communication link failure
- This will cascade eventually to all clients, who will also
see 4GL STOP condition errors on their end (which makes sense as their
transactions have failed).
I can bounce the Vantage appservers and all is well again.
Searching for that error 7884 finds reports that it is networking
related (although my Vantage appservers and database server are on the
same host), however I don't see anything in my server logs to suggest
that anything happened to my NIC's link state or anything like that.
Has anyone else seen this and what's the fix?
