Multi Site (Company)

'Direct' means it does not use sonic.

We are at 9.05.605 and 'Direct' is available.

Within External System integration/setup/external company Maintenance
when you have an external company pulled up,
got to Actions
Epicor has options to "convert to Multi-company direct"
This will change what is necessary for you to run 'Direct' instead of 'Sonic' I beleive you need to go into all of your external companies and do this to change it to 'direct'

Instead of having 'multi-company Server process' running all the time, (scheduled from startup) you will now use 'Multi-company Direct Server process' running.

I beleive DIRECT is faster on our system, and if you have multiple databases (test, train live etc) you can actually run multi company within each database - where as with Sonic - you can only have 1 instance of multi company running per server,

If you run this for a different database - like test, make sure you change the name or location of the log file, so each instance will have it's own log file.

I think Epicor said 'Sonic' would be used if you were transfering data between different servers - but I really don't understand how that would work because Epicor couldn't help me get Sonic running on it's own server when we used sonic. ....

Setting up this new Module and running into some issues. I need an expert in this area. Any clues on who to contact on this to help us get it up and running? Someone quick as we are planning a 3-1 live date.
What version are you on?

If you are on 9.05, I would seriously look into making sure you are up to a
very recent SP, starting with version 9.05.605(maybe 604?), but I know with
the current 607 version, you can eliminate the need for Sonic for many of
the functions, which can make the process much easier.

I have just been involved in setting up and going live with a multi site, multi currency group with 607A. We are using Direct rather than Sonic. What do you need to do?

We are trying to get the global linking to work so we can pass a PO to the other company to manufacture the product. We are using Direct not Sonic. We have gotten very little guidance from Epicor on set up and process flow.

Direct is an alternative to Sonic for multi company processing available in your version.
It only works for companies sharing the same physical server / database.
Sonic is a message queue that can span servers / boundaries.

Direct is faster, easier to setup, however there are some caveats, the Multi Company Technical reference guide details these which is available on EpicWeb

Direct is exactly what it sounds like, it is a direct transfer and movement
of the data within the database without using an external process to make
the move.

This is different than sonic in a couple of ways, one of the keys ways is
that sonic is a service running outside of the database that takes data that
has been queued up in specific tables and moves it to another table,
adjusting a field if need be, like the plant or company field.

The one major benefit to using direct over sonic is the ability to have more
than one database running the process on a single installation of Epicor.
This was not possible with Sonic because Sonic only uses the company ID as
it's markers to know where to place the information it's moving, and with
more than one DB of the exact same type, you end up with multiple DBs with
the same Company IDs and data could end up in the wrong place. For example
if you are testing something in your EpicorTest905 DB and that was created
from a backup of your Epicor905 DB, then there is the potential for the data
to actually end up in your Epicor905 DB, thus resulting in mass chaos and
essentially data corruption.
