Network and Exchange backup

John,

We use Arcserve 2000 and utilize Media Pools. It has been a long time since
I set it up... but I just label the tapes with the serial number which
"never" changes. Arcserve renames the tape to the current date each time a
backup is run on it. It has never done it in the way you are describing. A
possible red herring is I have found that the status screens (Media Pool,
Job Status, Backup) do not always refresh after a job is run. I have to
close the offending window and reopen it to get the current information.
You can call or contact me off list if you have any more questions.

I am doing straight back ups each night, I am not doing anything
incremental. Furthermore, I reformat every tape before use. So I don't
really work with media pools... I guess using Backup Exec for a few years
got me into the habit of doing it this way...

Hi Paul,

General Sheet Metal uses Arcserve 2000. I have trouble with viewing the
status.
It looks like the tape is dated from first use.
I have to dig down to find current date.
Is this the way it is supposted to be?

Thanks,

John Mansfield

Does anybody have a suggestion on backup software for the network? We
are currently using Backup Exec 7.0 and it's time for an upgrade.
Exchange server is currently running and being backed-up as well. I
found the new Veritas 9.0 with the Exchange Option way out of line.
Thanks.

Jay,

Have you checked in to ArcServe yet? I found it much more stable and

We run Samba on a FreeBSD Unix PC. It fully emulates an NT P.D.C. for
file and printer services; and handles remote user authentication for a
variety of other operating systems on our network.

Good ol' "gtar" dumps the shared data and machine-specific OS data to tape
each night. We don't keep anything critical on our users' workstations, so
they're not backed up. But Samba includes the "smbtar" program that can be
used to pull PC data to the server for inclusion in the backup. There are
other free-ware unix utilities, like "amanda"
http://sourceforge.net/projects/amanda/ that do a fancier version of the same.

All the above is freely available. As a bonus feature: last week I
installed a Samba upgrade. Not only did it not require rebooting the
server -- but I didn't even have to shutdown the old version or kick the
users off :)

Since you have 5.5 you have to get an Exchange plugin. If you have
Exchange 2000 you can backup the Exchange directly using an Open File
Manager. I use Novanet 8 by Novastor. www.novastor.com
