There is an exceptional program called STARTUP COP that I believe is a
freebee. It lets you see everything that starts on your machine and to
control its startup. I like minimum things starting up.
Just do a google to find it.

Subject: [Vantage] network printer on labtop
Hello group
I have a HP multi-function 850 series printer with an attached print
server set up on my laptop computer that I use to fax and scan when I am
connected to the network. All works just fine as long as I have a
network connection. The problem comes when I have the laptop
disconnected form the network and shut it down. The computer takes
forever to shut down because the software that runs the print server and
printer cannot find the devices. I have to tell the computer to end
task to get it to shut down. This is a pain if I am trying to exit
quickly. (This computer is used for diagnostics on the network and
connecting to some stand alone computers in the shop, as well as work at
home.)
Does anyone know of a way to disable the startup of these programs if I
am not logging on to the network? I am running Win 98 SE.
Thank you
