New Vantage server recommendations

Sure, active directory doesn't take much to run, but to be on the
safe side I'd make sure to have a good amount of hard drive space on
the system drive (20 gb to be safe, where active directory usually
is). Older servers tend to have that problem.

I have been breaking the rules for a couple years although I didn't
even know it until becoming part of this group. Our current Vantage
install is running on a server that has a whole bunch of other
responsibilities.

I asked this same question of my account manager but would be
interested in any input from those of us in the real world.

We currently have 4 servers running as follows

"Main-Server" (Vantage, domain controller, file server, print server,
DHCP, DNS)
Compaq Proliant DL380
Qty 2: Xeon 3.2Ghz
3.5G RAM
Server 2003

"SDRC02" (file server for Eng files, SDRC I-deas server (limited use))
This server runs our old engineering software that has limited use
but still needs to remain running.
Compaq Proliant DL380 G4
Xeon 2.8Ghz
3G RAM
Server 2000 (will be upgraded to 2003)

"SW01" (Solidworks)
Compaq Proliant DL380 G5
Qty 2: Xeon 5110 1.60 Ghz
4G RAM
Server 2003

"Exchange" (Exchange 2003)
Compaq Proliant DL360 G4p
Xeon 3 Ghz
3G RAM
Server 2003

I also have an older ML370 933Mhz with 768M RAM that is not being used.

We currently have 16 Vantage users, 7 MES users and Service Connect.
The standard users may grow slightly as we get our Sales department
more involved in Vantage.

I am looking at proposing a new server for Vantage use and would like
recommendations for the new server and also for better use of our
current servers. I have seen references that SC should run on it's
own server and I am wondering if that could be combined with one of
these other servers as well.

Here are some thoughts:

One thing that jumps out is that you only have one domain controller.
I'd get another one seeing as they cost nothing (1 grand for the
hardware and 1 grand for the software (win2003)) and now you have
double the redundancy in that arena.

The funny thing about Epicor and their recommendations is that their
instruction manuals always warn you to seperate server roles but are
written assuming you are using one server.

You didn't specify the version of vantage you are using, I'm on
Vantage 8.3 here and the server is a :
Two Xeon E5440 2.83 GHZ (quad core)
Win 2003 Enterprise
12 gb of ram
Raid 0+1

Basically it was bought (before my time here) along the exact specs
provided by Epicor for Vantage 8.3

The server is currently running Vantage 8.3, Service Connect and AQM.
I have 70 users on Vantage, and very few users on AQM. I installed
AQM and SC on the same server because at the time I didn't have
another avaiable for this purpouse.

Right now the server is using 4gb of memory. Users still report slow
times, although personally I think it works quite fast. When a user
tells me that a report takes 20 seconds to come up I think back to my
Oracle based erp days and think that's lightning fast.

Vantage is an odd beast, I'm used to working with microsoft and
oracle based products which will take all that you give them, Vantage
seems to take what you let it take (through the use of the Progress
Explorer configuration tool).

For your situation I'd probably get more memory for the new Vatnage
server (get Enterprise edition to do this), get a thousand dollar
backup domain controller (can also use it to replicate files from the
other file servers as another form of redudnancy), and possibly
another thousand dollar server to do service connect if you want to
do things "without breaking any rules"

Thanks for your thoughts Paul. As a self-taught, one man IT department
I always welcome as much information I can get.

I got a call back from Epicor. They are sending me their
recommendations for a new Vantage server. He said I could get away with
putting Service Connect on our old engineering server (SDRC02) since
there won't be much else going on with that server. I would look at
adding another processor and increasing RAM to 4G.

Would it be worth running our older ML370 as a backup domain controller?
