Newbie ODBC Questions

Brian,

Thanks for your help. I got the ODBC kit and am reading it. Someone else sent me some instructions too. I am just plugging along. I will keep you posted. I am sure I will have more questions.

Juliet

Juliet,

It has been a year and a half since I did this but I'll try to clear
the cobwebs and lend a hand. The instructions I have were for
Implementing ODBC for Vantage 5.2. I used them when I went from 5.0
to 6.0 and I believe the same instructions would apply to 6.1 which
is where we are currently. Not sure which version you are on. The
instructions encourage you to change the sysprogress password and
create an ODBCUSER. The ODBCUSER needs only read only rights, this
will prevent any accidental writing to the DB and any potential
corruption that may result. See if you can get a copy of the
instructions from support. If not, I will try to help you along, but
there are a lot of instructions to follow and you'll need to do most
of it while no one else is in the system.

1. How do you change the sysprogress password? I did not get a satisfactory answer when I called epicor. If it isn't possible:

2. How do you grant the same access as sysprogress (full) to another user? I am not familiar with the correct commands and only have the ODBC Kit to go on. In there you have GRANT SELECT. What do you use for full? GRANT FULL?

3. I have been browsing this one list for anything ODBC related and reading it as time allows. Does anyone have any websites or other sources that could help me learn this stuff fast.

Thanks

Juliet:

First of all, I would NOT change the password for ODBC. Because if you EVER
forget it, you are basically screwed.

Did you just want someone to run an existing report? You can just create an
executable to run the report without fear that they change the report.

Sorry for posting twice everyone. We are experiencing e-mail
problems.

My original intent was because of the username and password that you
have to put in the Vantage icon. If a user right clicks and chooses
edit - they can see the password.

I tried to use the username and password of ODBCUSER but it won't
work. I am thinking because of security. I thought I was told that
whatever user you use to make a report you have to have the same
password to be able to access the report. I don't want to use the
sysprogress user to write reports if I have to have that name and
password out in public view. That's why I wanted to make ODBCUSER
(or any other user) have full access and obviously not allow payroll
tables.

I have a BOL form that someone sent me off list. I just went into
report style menu and chose it instead of the default vantage
report. It works when I use the sysprogress code but not if I use
ODBCUSER. I have changed all links in crystal and ODBC and they all
match. I could be missing one though. I am new at this.

So, how do you make an executable and attach it to vantage? Will
that solve my problem? Is there a document I can download somewhere?

Thanks for everyones help.

Juliet

Creating an executable is pretty easy...The instructions from Vantage are a little lacking but you should be able to get through it.

First you need to compile the crystal report. Use Answer book # 325MPS for this. Note: if your user does not have crystal installed on their machine, be sure to include the DLLs necessary for them to run the report (step 6 in 325MPS). Also, be sure to save all of the data in your UD folder in the MFGSYS61 folder.

Once you have compiled the report use the attached document to help you link it to Vantage.
