Novell and NT upgrades: best way for Vantage - OT?

Wow, that's alot of stuff, but it shouldn't be to bad. Bring the
ML370 in with windows 2000 on it. Now it's been a while since I was
a Novell administrator, but if the 2000 server is only being used for
Vantage you shouldn't have to worry about NDS and Active Directory
problems. Isn't Netware on version 6? Load the new versions of
Vantage on the ML370 and just follow the insturctions to upgrading.
I would make sure your exsisting database is as clean as possible.
Dump and Load should do it. We had problems until we did a Dump and
Load. Index rebuild not a bad idea. This should be the smooth part.
Updating all your clients will probally take the most amount of time
unless you are using a remote install tool like Zen Works. The
conversion will take some time from 5.0 to 5.1. Ours lasted 5 hours
on a 1.5GB database.

Now that Vantage is on the ML370 you have a free server. Get the
newest version of netware loaded and see if you can't get your files
transferred and your NDS directory on the new box. I wonder if you
will have problem because of the different versions of Netware. Are
you going to dump IPX and for TCP/IP? I haven't worked on a network
with Novell and 2000 together. I would do my homework on Novell and
Microsofts AD. Since you are using NDS, you need to make sure
everything on Novell clients can access the 2000 server Make sure AD
doesn't get setup on the 2000 box, or next thing you now you'll have
DNS servers, a domain controller, and much more. I could write all
day, but you can get a hold of me outside of the group. 262-252-4003

Hello all! I am looking for any/all input for an upgrade I am about
to do. You are welcome to contact me on or off-list as I will
appreciate all help. File Servers: 1) we have a Compaq 1500 (RAID 5)
with Novell 4.11 for file and print services. 2) we have a Compaq
6000 (RAID 10) with NT 4 for Vantage. We are about to purchase a
Compaq ML370. I want to replace the 6000 with the ML370 as the NT
server using RAID10, then replace the 1500 with the 6000 as the
Novell server using RAID 5, removing the 1500 from the LAN. Obviously
I want the max power for Vantage is the reason I don't just replace
the 1500 with the ML370 with Novell and leave the NT alone. I also
want to upgrade the NT 4 to NT 2000 and the Novell 4.11 to 5.1. The
timing of the NOS upgrades could be critical and dictate how Vantage
is loaded on the new file server. In other words, if I have the
ML370 preloaded with NT2000 (sp2, right?), will I have to reload
Vantage from scratch from the CD? How do the database files need to
be restored/copied correctly? You should also know: we use NDS for
NT for administration, the Vantage database was about to exceed 2GB
so it has been 'restructered', I believe is the term. If we restore
the data from the 6000 (existing NT 4) to the ML370, then upgrade NT
4 to NT2000, then you get any clutter along with it. The 6000 has 4
x 9.1 GB drives and the ML 370 will have 4 x 36GB drives, both have
smart array controllers and dual processors. I am primarily
requesting your input for the best upgrade scenarios for Novell, NT
and Vantage, and any 'gotchas' and 'gotta-haves' along the way. To
take it a step further, we are on v 5.00.329. What if I decide to
bring in the ML370 with NT2000 loaded, then load the newer version of
Vantage 5.1 or 5.2, then do the conversion of the data onto the new
server. The Vantage database is in need of re-indexing but I do not
have the necessary disk space on the existing NT server. Oh yea, all
this with no down time...OK...I'm listening...Thank you in advance!
