NT4.0 Server to W2K

If you rename the new server with the old server's name, you can
avoid reintalling all your clients.

I am replacing our Vantage NT4.0 server with a W2K server.
Can someone please provide me with a "checklist", detailed instructions are
even better, of items to do.
We are on 4.00811 and 9.0B29.
We do NOT plan on upgrading to 5.x because of corporate mandates. (We will
use their system in about a year).
Tech support did recommend upgrading the Progress patch to 9.0B44.
Can I go from Progress and Vantage right off the CD's to .811 and 9.0B44,
skipping patches in between?
Will installing another installation of Vantage on our Lan cause problems
with the live version?

Any help and advice is appreciated as I have never attempted this before.

Thanks.

Jim,

I upgraded our Vantage server from NT4 to W2K recently. Didn't upgrade
Vantage version. I don't think this qualifies for what you're doing, but if
I can be of any help at all email me.

Read message number 20283 for a couple pointers. I installed a new
server from NT 4 to NT 4 but I think the same rules will apply.

You can have multiple servers running Vantage on the same network
without one interfering with another. Your clients go by the name
of the server. Is your current Vantage server a primary domain
controller, backup domain controller or member server? This will
make a difference as to how you'll add the new one. If it is any
type of a domain controller, install it as a backup domain
controller with a bogus name like NEWSERVER or something. Install a
fresh installation of Progress and Vantage. If it were me, I'd
install Progress and Vantage to the exact same versions as you're
using right now, that way, you won't run into any conversion issues
when you copy the database over. After your server is up and
running and Vantage is freshly installed, do an online backup of
your current database and copy that backup file to the new server
and then restore it to the new server. This will update Vantage to
your current database. If you want to install a new Progress or
Vantage patch, this would be the time to do it. Once your new
Vantage server is running smoothly, pull the old one offline and
rename the new one to the old one's name but don't forget to delete
and then recreate the old server's name in Server Manager (assuming
you're in a domain). Once you reboot, the clients will attempt the
new server's database.

*Note: If it is a Primary Domain Controller, once you're ready to
go live with the database, you'll have to drop the demote the
Primary Domain Controller and Promote this new one. I guess you can
still change the name of the server as I did on mine but it was a
Backup Domain Controller.

A couple other notes, you'll need to copy over any custom Crystal
Reports, Report Builder Reports and VB forms. I also had several
different .VTG files for data collection and misc. logins that I
needed to copy.

When I tried to login with my first client, it gave an error, can't
recall the exact error but it was the Vantage.ini file in the
Vantage directory that needed to be copied from the old server.
Eranet's knowledgebase showed this file to be in the Progress
directory but even though I changed it there, I found and had to
change the copy in the Vantage directory. Not sure if it's supposed
to be there or not but the database is running fine now.

I hope this helps. There might be more involved in mixing Win2k and
NT servers in a domain but I haven't gotten any Win2k servers yet.
If you need more help, I created a checklist for my conversion, I
could email it to you.

Jim:

NowÂ’s the perfect time to gain some valuable experience.

1. Install the W2K server as a member server
2. Using the original Progress/Vantage cd, go through the
install in W2K.
3. Apply the patches to get you current to where you are
now on NT4.
4. Do an online probackup of the database from the NT4
machine
5. Do a prorestore to the W2K machine
6. At this point, you should have a duplicate of NT4 on
the W2K machine
7. Start/stop the database, connect a client or two or
three
8. Apply the latest and greatest patches to 4.0 / 9.0 on
W2K
9. Repeat step 7
10. Once youÂ’ve satisfied yourself all is ok, repeat steps 4
and 5
11. Repeat step 7
12. Uninstall Progress on the clients
13. Disconnect the clients from the NT4 server
14. Connect the clients to the W2K server
15. Install Progress/Vantage on the clients

Amazing one can proofread and still not catch something. As I read this
after the posting, I realized by doing steps 10 and 11 (repeating the

Terry,
Thanks for the valuable information. I may take you up on the phone call.
My main concern now is not messing up the live database on the NT4 box while
trying to get the W2K server going.

Thanks.
