O/T FTP Software

There are issues with the ftp ports and firewalls... your best bet is to use a FTP client that supports PASV ftp. Internet Explorer does NOT support PASV ftp without changing Internet Options - Advanced then check the "Use Passive FTP" option.

FTP RFC959
Normal FTP uses a "command" connection for sending commands from client to server. When a client downloads a file, the server opens a TCP connection back to the client in order to transfer the data.
In a normal firewall environment, the firewall allows all outgoing TCP connections from clients to servers, and blocks all incoming connections (that might be hackers trying to break into machines). This FTP mode of creating an inbound connection causes problems. One solution is to use smarter firewalls. Another solution has been to use an alternate mode in FTP called "PASV", where the client initiates the data connection.

Hi everyone,
We are currently using a dial up bysinc connection to get into EDS for our
GM mail. Apparently, EDS is stopping the use of bysinc and one of the
options is to login through FTP. I'm trying to use Ipswitch FTP Pro but
can't log in. Has anyone done this or is anyone considering it? Any help
would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Nelson

I usually use Internet Explorer (6.0) to access FTP. Haven't needed to use special software in a long time but I'm not much of an expert on FTP either. I just enter ftp:// etc.... in the address field and wait for prompt to login (if needed). Could there be a ports issue in a firewall where you might need to open a specific port for FTP traffic?
