OCX errors on Citrix server

I like certain features of Citrix like shadowing, Nfuse Web Publishing,
etc. If I am moving to Server 2003 (I have my test server for Vantage
8.0 in 2003), I am certain my company will not pay for Citrix, so it
will not be an issue.

I have had no issues since switching to Server 2003 and I performed the
upgrade to version 6.1 from 6.0 this past weekend. However, if I was
going to a different version of progress I probably would've rebuilt the
server, which I've done in the past. My point being I use Terminal
Server with Server 2003 Standard Addition and I have had no issues since
I brought it up back in November of last year, but I saw the same OCX
errors/issue when I was on W2K Server with Citrix XP. The only fix was
to rebuild the machine and since I was going that far I purchased new
hardware as well.

Epicor and a consultant recommended by my sales rep from Epicor were
ineffective. My experience was it just kept getting worse and was
extremely frustrating for me and all affected users. I know it sounds
extreme, but I'd rebuild your server with Server 2003 or whatever flavor
you have and then reinstall Progress/Vantage as documented by Epicor.
Whether you put Citrix on top of TS is up to you, but I've found it
easier to use TS on it's own as its one less layer to manage and in my
opinion MS has done of good job of letting an admin customize a TS
desktop with group policy editor.

Is everyone that have these problems in W2K? How about other operating
systems? I have (believe it or not) an NT4.0 service pack 6 dual
processor server with no problems running Citrix and Terminal server
together. I re-boot my server just about 3 to 4 weeks when a problem
arises. Otherwise, it is on 24/7 and 80 percent of the company connects
that way.

Something I must mention: I disregarded the instructions and
recommendations from Epicor on installing the full progress version. I
have done this with 5.1 and 6.1. I prepare the server to install the
software (Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs, etc.), install progress
client and Vantage client. I create a separate .vtg or .mfg file with no
temporary directory (usually c:\vntgwrk or whatever) since
Terminal/Citrix manage all temporary folders. It works faster than my
direct connections.

Now, I am really worry about moving to other OSs....

I reboot nightly due to the ocx problem and sometime I still have to
reboot during the day once the OCX error appears. Once it appears, noone
can use vantage. I've loaded the patches and fixes from Microsoft and
Epicor and have both Progress and Vantage loaded locally and still the
OCX devil appears.

You have to install Progress and Vantage locally on the Citrix server.

Periodically we get the following error on our Citrix server when
launching Vantage.

"Specified ActiveX control is not registered or the .ocx file was
moved from where it was registered. Error occurred in procedure:
control_load lib/syslogin.w (6087)"

Has anyone found a permanent fix for this? We re-run the InstOCX.exe
file, and it fixes it. Unfortunately, it returns periodically.
One of the reasons I phased out Citrix in my environment was due to
getting these errors on my Citrix box almost daily. Vantage support had
a few suggestions including a MS fix, but nothing corrected this issue
(including running instOCX). I even sought the help of a "consultant",
who was unable to fix the problem. I eventually ended up purchasing a
new Server and running TS without Citrix. I'm not sure what OS you're
running on your Citrix box, but I was running W2K Server on my old
Citrix box and when I purchased my new TS box I installed Server 2003 on
and no issues to date whatsoever. Are you getting 'white screened' as
well, when you receive the active x control errors and then your users
get thrown out of the session? Because, if you are in my experience it
just goes downhill from there unfortunately.

We were getting these on a weekly basis at least. We ran a registry fix
that Vantage gave us (regocx.exe) and applied two Microsoft patches. It
didn't appear to fix it right away and I was told that it was probably a
group policy problem. However, I've made no changes to any group policy
on our DC's because we don't have one - funny thing is, we haven't
received this error in a couple of weeks (knock on wood).

After my issue with File Types I'm ready to throw TS out the window. I'm
really looking forward to Epicor providing us with a web-based user
interface and getting rid of TS. It's nothing but problems...especially
printing some crystal reports.

Good luck, you'll need it.

That happened to me before.

And no matter what I did unregocx, etc., nothing worked

So, I uninstall progress and vantage locally.

Get into registry and manually remove all related to Vantage server
(progress, ocx, etc., all the relate items can search using server
name, epic folder what ever you did setup)

And do clean install progress and vantage.
it works for me since then (more than 3 years)

(becaution when install new softshare on the Citrix server - ocx file)

Hope that help,

Is everyone that have these problems in W2K? How about other operating
systems? I have (believe it or not) an NT4.0 service pack 6 dual

How about other operating

together. I re-boot my server just about 3 to 4 weeks when a problem

Be aware that Terminal Services Client Access Licenses were included
with any copy of WIN2K Pro of WINXP Pro. That is not the case with
Windows 2003. When I upgraded my Terminal Server to 2003 I was unaware
of this licensing change. Six months later(temporary licenses expire
after 180 days)Terminal Services were not accessible by anyone. I had to
buy licenses and activate them to get it going again.

My 2 cents.
