ODBC Questions

Bruce,

ODBC is useful if your users need live access to Vantage data from outside
Vantage. For example, I have created some reports in MS Access that show
data from Vantage and our custom MS Access Estimating System at the same
time. This allows the user to be in the Estimating System and have
visibility to Vantage without having to go to Vantage. It also allows the
comparison of data from the two systems in a live environment. You could
also link Vantage data to Excel, so spreadsheets can be populated with
Vantage data that automatically refreshes each time you open the
spreadsheet. This way you are always sure you are working with the current
data.

There are a couple of drawbacks. One is that the new Merant driver is not
very stable. You get ODBC errors if the users moves too fast, or the data
set is too large. The other problem is that ODBC is VERY slow.

If you simply want to export data from Vantage, and can live with
re-exporting each time you want to refresh the data, it is much simpler to
use the Vantage exporting tools.

Will somebody please give me the low-down on ODBC connectivity for Vantage.
We're discussing exporting data into other MS applications and we're not
sure if we need the ODBC option or not. What's it useful for?

Thanks,

Bruce Brannan

We no longer allow attachments to files. To access/share Report Files,
please go to the following link: http://www.egroups.com/files/vantage/
(Note: If this link does not work for you the first time you try it, go to
www.egroups.com, login and be sure to save your password, choose My Groups,
choose Vantage, then choose Files. If you save the password, the link above
will work the next time you try it.)

Bruce -

You can export any Vantage data via the Export Utility
in Vantage. ODBC is not required.
