ODBC - Updating to Vantage DB from Access

Thanks to everyone with suggestions. Lonnie Drew has very kindly offered to make (and did) a routine to deteemine the earliest job date and update the part table with it. Jeff, I suspect the code is very similar to yours. I really need to learn more about the procedure editor. I don't really need to compile so would not need Provision. Thanks to Patrick also for the groundcontrol tips - that will help me get started for future tasks like this. Ir eally need to just learn it as long as I have it.

I also need to try the newer ODBC and will see if that would have written to the userdate field.

Again, thanks to all,
-Todd C.

Don't do it !!!!

Just kidding. Maybe it will work. I prefer using the Procedure Editor.
Here is some sample code....

def var pPartNum Like PartRev.PartNum no-undo.
def var pRevi Like PartRev.RevisionNum no-undo.
def var pPartX Like PartRev.UserDecimal3 no-undo.
def var pPartY Like PartRev.UserDecimal4 no-undo.

on write of PartRev OVERRIDE do:
end.

INPUT FROM VALUE("c:\temp\Array.txt").

REPEAT:
IMPORT DELIMITER "^" pPartNum pRevi pPartX pPartY.
For each PartRev where PartRev.Company = "Holaday"
and PartRev.PartNum = pPartNum
and PartRev.RevisionNum = pRevi
and PartRev.UserDecimal3 = 0
EXCLUSIVE-lock:

/* DISPLAY pPartNum pRev */
/* UserDecimal3 */
/* UserDecimal4 */
/* pPartX */
/* pPartY */
/* with 2 col. */

ASSIGN PartRev.UserDecimal3 = pPartY
PartRev.UserDecimal4 = pPartX.

END.
END.

INPUT CLOSE.

Change variables to match your situation and test on training database
first!
This is the bomb proof way to get the job done.

The newer ODBC driver should work fine. I wouldn't worry about
updateing a UserDate field as long as you know how to write the Access
query.
Just make sure you set the ODBC driver to READ COMMITED.

I know already...don't do it - but I'm in a pretty big bind and
it looks
like the last best option. I need to udpate a date to the
Part.UserDate4
field. Actually about 800 of them. I am using the old Merant
ODBC 3.50 and
can connect just fine between a small Access table containing
PartNum and
the date to use (date of 1st job for the part). But when I try
to do an
update query I get the following messages:
ODBC --update on linked table 'Part' failed
[Merant][ODBC Progress driver][PROGRESS]** db\trg\write.p"
was not
found. (293) (#293)

Which looks suspiciously (to me) like even though this is a
userfield it
involves some sort of write trigger (which I have little enough
understanding of).

I have GroundControl and could try that but I've never used it
(yet) so
would have to learn how to make a script from scratch. It might
be faster
to enter 800 dates. President of company "demands" that I have
a report by
tomorrow that shows sales for parts belonging to sales engineers
(another
part user field) in 2003 for parts 1st booked (based on earliest
job entered
date) in last four years. Involves a new incentive plan for the
internal
sales people where they get a "declining residual" commission on
all sales
of parts they engineered for four years.

So am I sunk? Is there any way to update the UserDate4 field
via Access and
ODBC? How hard would a GroundControl script be to cycle through
Part
maintenance and change the dates? It's either these options or
I have about
an hour and a half to get started manually entering the dates so
I can have
them usable by the report by tomorrow.

Thanks,

I know already...don't do it - but I'm in a pretty big bind and
it looks
like the last best option. I need to udpate a date to the
Part.UserDate4
field. Actually about 800 of them. I am using the old Merant
ODBC 3.50 and
can connect just fine between a small Access table containing
PartNum and
the date to use (date of 1st job for the part). But when I try
to do an
update query I get the following messages:
ODBC --update on linked table 'Part' failed
[Merant][ODBC Progress driver][PROGRESS]** db\trg\write.p"
was not
found. (293) (#293)

Which looks suspiciously (to me) like even though this is a
userfield it
involves some sort of write trigger (which I have little enough
understanding of).

I have GroundControl and could try that but I've never used it
(yet) so
would have to learn how to make a script from scratch. It might
be faster
to enter 800 dates. President of company "demands" that I have
a report by
tomorrow that shows sales for parts belonging to sales engineers
(another
part user field) in 2003 for parts 1st booked (based on earliest
job entered
date) in last four years. Involves a new incentive plan for the
internal
sales people where they get a "declining residual" commission on
all sales
of parts they engineered for four years.

So am I sunk? Is there any way to update the UserDate4 field
via Access and
ODBC? How hard would a GroundControl script be to cycle through
Part
maintenance and change the dates? It's either these options or
I have about
an hour and a half to get started manually entering the dates so
I can have
them usable by the report by tomorrow.

Thanks,
