ODBC vs. Data Convert Tool

Thank you, Bruce. I will contact my Epicor CR for pricing.

I don't remember exactly, but I'm sure it's over $1000.
Also, Epicor has been pretty stingy with support.
They have steered me to programming services every time I mention the Data
Convert Tool..
If you have the time, you can figure most things out on your own.
If you're on a tight schedule, I'd budget a few hours of programming
services.

Bruce,

Data convert tool seems the way to go (I would never use ODBC for
updates or
add again!). How much you pay for it? Is it a part of package, etc?

Thanks!

Try one field at a time in your query,
If no data is being returned it's usually been a typing error in my
query.

Vantage 6.00.521

I recently received the conversion tool. I've mapped it to an access
database ready for import. But when I view the results of the source
query, the data is not there. The column headings are there, but no
data. I can open the tables in access and they are fully propagated.
I
have connected to both databases using ODBC.

What am I doing wrong? Any help would be appreciated.

I'm using the Conversion Tool as well. Tech Support told me they will

not provide support if I use Access to blast the tables (how would
they
know???) so I am only using Access to view the imported data and
prepare
the import tables. I've done parts, inventory, costs, BOMs,
operations,
vendors, customers and a few of the master tables. I'm not having any

problems getting the data in but still working out some of the kinks
associated with rolling the BOMs - too many fields and so little time.

Mario,

>I second Aaron's opinion on writing to Vantage using Access.<
>Work always in a test environment and test a lot<
We are migrating from Dataflo.
With 30,000+ unique parts importing is a must for us.

>and started to pray right away<
I'm getting past the point of praying.
So far I've done Parts, BOM's, BOO's, Inventories (with the required
transactions), Costs (with the required transactions), Prices and
Vendors. Testing of the imported data has been very promising.

We'd still like to get our Clientel calls (60,000+) and Machine
Profiles
(3000?) imported.

Calls are turning out to be a little more complicated than I expected.

There is a table called IMCRMCall that has copies of all the calls
entered using the Vantage interface. I'm still studying this. Anybody
know what is going on with the IMCRMCall table? It almost seems like
it's for some functionality that may be added to Vantage in the
future.

Anyway, I'd STILL like to hear thoughts if any of you have used both
the
Data Conversion Tool and Access to import/update Vantage data. The one

thing I've noticed is that an Access query tends to crash if I am
updating more than 1000 records. As long as I break my updates into
smaller chunks, it seems to work just as well as the Data Convert
Tool.
I'm just wondering if I wasted a few thousand dollars.

Thanks,

Bruce

First...I will let you know that using ODBC to write info into Vantage
by-passes any triggers in the progress code. Therefore you risk data
corruption. It is wise to avoid entering data via ODBC. But if you do,
be very careful you are writing to a field that will not have a trigger
associated (for instance you are fairly safe with the VB form fields)
but be very very careful.

Subject: [Vantage] ODBC vs. Data Convert Tool

Hi,

We purchased the Data Conversion Tool to import our Dataflo
records.
I've been using it for about 6 months & in most cases it works
pretty
well. However, today I was having trouble trying to import our
Clientel calls into the CRMCall table. The Data Conversion Tool
was
having trouble with the index. ( I had a similar problem when I
tried
to import Vendors. )

Just for the heck of it, I tried an append query in Access using
the
Merant ODBC driver. I was able to add the calls with no problem.

This made me wonder, why do I even need the Data Conversion
Tool? Can
anybody explain the pro's and con's of these two methods of
importing
data?

Thanks,
Bruce

I second Aaron's opinion on writing to Vantage using Access. I did associate
all my customers to price lists by writing directly into the table using
Access. At the beginning, it did not show any records. I had to stop and
start the database and started to pray right away. The price lists were
there, but I started to get an error message... Fortunately, it did not have
anything to do with what I had done. Customer names with an ampersand (&)
generates an error message when you are working in the price lists screen.
Work always in a test environment and test a lot before doing something like
I did above.

Good luck!

I'm using the Conversion Tool as well. Tech Support told me they will
not provide support if I use Access to blast the tables (how would they
know???) so I am only using Access to view the imported data and prepare
the import tables. I've done parts, inventory, costs, BOMs, operations,
vendors, customers and a few of the master tables. I'm not having any
problems getting the data in but still working out some of the kinks
associated with rolling the BOMs - too many fields and so little time.

We'd still like to get our Clientel calls (60,000+) and Machine Profiles
(3000?) imported.

Calls are turning out to be a little more complicated than I expected.
There is a table called IMCRMCall that has copies of all the calls
entered using the Vantage interface. I'm still studying this. Anybody
know what is going on with the IMCRMCall table? It almost seems like
it's for some functionality that may be added to Vantage in the future.

Anyway, I'd STILL like to hear thoughts if any of you have used both the
Data Conversion Tool and Access to import/update Vantage data. The one
thing I've noticed is that an Access query tends to crash if I am
updating more than 1000 records. As long as I break my updates into
smaller chunks, it seems to work just as well as the Data Convert Tool.
I'm just wondering if I wasted a few thousand dollars.

Thanks,

Bruce

Bruce,

Data convert tool seems the way to go (I would never use ODBC for updates or
add again!). How much you pay for it? Is it a part of package, etc?

Thanks!

Make sure if you have a comma at the end of a line that you leave a
space after it. The tool concatenates the strings together so if you
don't have a space the field names will look like this PartNum,Revision
instead of PartNum, Revision.
