What you are looking for is a Standalone Media Converter. I'd suggest
calling Black Box and seeing what they have to offer - 877-877-2269.
You would end up with -- Hub/Switch ---> drop cable --> media converter -->
fiber --> media converter --> drop cable --> Hub/Switch.
Part # LE1505A - UTP to MultiMode - $ 199.00 each - you would need a pair -
converts fiber to twisted pair .... MAY work for you. At least it's a
start.
Do you need 10 or 100 mbps speed ?
Do you need an uplink media converter or can your hubs handle it themselves
?
Call Blackbox or your favorite geek shop and see what they've got. I'm
guessing the converters will run you between $ 400 - $800 for the pair.

You can buy a Linksys EF2S24 24 port EtherFast II 10/100 24 port switch for
$390 from CDW and the EF2SST 100BASE-FX Switch Module for this is $115. You
would need one of each at each end. That would get the hardware done for
just over $1000. You should be able to get 2 strand fiber for around $2 to
$3 per foot. You can get a 6 stand from Black Box for outside installation
for $2 per foot, but you have to buy 1000 feet minimum from them. You
should be able to get shorter lengths from Anixter of someone like that. I
am running one the the Linksys switches now and can't tell the difference
between it and the 3COM switches I have that cost $1,264 for the switch and
$697 for the fiber module.

I, too, am looking at wireless.�It looks like the latest generation 802.11b is MORE than adequate for the task. All the reports I have read indicate that wireless is mature and reliable. You get 11Mbps�and you don't have to deal with the hassles of running cables. I believe that you can also reconfigure the bridge as an access point later on�by changing antennas, so the investment is not totally wasted if you have any use for wireless LAN access in the future. The Cisco Aironet wireless bridge kit that I am looking at has two transceivers with 2 all weather antennas and 2 50' lengths of Coax to connect the antennas to the transceivers for $3200 (CDW price). Cisco part�#AIR-SK342BB.

When I called Black box the other day they the equipment they quoted was more like $500 per side, plus custom length cable, plus installation. The lady estimated like $2,000.� What you are saying would be much more reasonable.
Initially we would just be running Data Collection PC's and one or two manager's PC's, so speed wouldn't have to be incredible.
It's looking like a wireless option might be a similar price to the above quote and save from having to run the cable overhead or underground.
A final (cheaper) option is running Coax cable with two cheap boxes ($30 each).� I understand lightning could pose a problem there.
