I'll throw in my $.02
Obviously the utility poles are owned by the different utility companies:
phone, cable, electric... I worked on a project where we ran fiber around a
city connecting 20+ buildings for a school district... I had to map a path
and research pole ownership then prepare a lease agreement for pole access.
It's a convoluted and tedious process (because they dont always know who's
poles whos).

Fiber is considered low voltage wiring, which in most parts of the
country is unregulated. As long as you stay at least 2-3 feet from
existing power wiring, and a support cable to help the fiber cable
from stretching and contracting during hot and cold temps. It is
very similar to running cable TV. No approval needed.Â

1. What options do we have to connect the 9 PC's across a parking lot and connect to our network (and Vantage server)? This would be a temporary situation (couple months) until the offices and server get moved to the new building.
2. I believe 600ft. is beyond the capability of CAT5 wire. Can wireless connections handle the traffic and distance?
3. If we ran an aerial line that distance, what technology could go 600 -700 feet?

We ran from 1 building to a Utility pole that we own and from there overhead
directly into building 2. This is the same way that our phone service
travels which was set up years before I was here so there was no approval
process. In our area I understand that you pay a rental fee per pole. It is
a small amount and the process takes a couple of weeks to complete.

In Michigan, If the poles are yours, you can use them without any issue. If
they are public utility poles, you need to get approval, and then will
probably
have to pay a "Monthly Rental" fee for using pole space. The utility
company
may also hit you with "Make Ready" Fees. We just put our own fiber in,
and ended up burying the whole thing (4800 ft). There were poles on the
route, and we would have had to pay to use them.
