Fresh new topic for y'all to kick around...

Does anyone use an Intranet? My understanding is that it's sort of like
the web except only for folks in your own company (or with your
permission?) to assess. If not, what is it?

I have this dream of having all our communications on some type of
Intranet that would include all of our ISO procedures, help screens (any
topic such as vantage, ISO, etc.) as well as inter personnel
email/mailing/messaging (one-to-one, one-to-select, one-to-all, etc.)
and even stuff I haven't thought up yet.

Is this just a pipe dream? Must I use some huge, overblown product from
Microsoft with many licenses, etc.?

If anyone does this type of thing would you mind clueing me in on a few
facts and figures or anything?

As usual, many, many thanks in advance!!!!!

You can do exactly what you described. Although you can
do it without anything from micro$oft...

Free operating system - http://www.freebsd.org
free web server software - http://www.apache.org

...and it will be a much more robust system.

Linux will also serve excellently well as an OS.
Yeah but with FreeBSD there is only one distribution, the package,
the kernel is maintained by a group, and ports collection is much
easier to install apps from and linux robbed parts of FreeBSD anyway.
FreeBSD is running some huge sites like yahoo.com.

I've setup Intranets with everything that you have asked about and more.
They are really easy. The Microsoft web server is free, so there are no
huge costs involved. There are tons of free tools that can be used to get
an intranet up and running. The most interesting aspect of the Intranet is
the return on investment that this technology provides. You can publish
information cheaply and reach everyone effectively. It works great with
revision-controlled documents. You can also setup a live report server on
your Intranet using Crystal reports.

Hope this helps,

...but I'm not going to get religious about it! Please at
least use linux over microsoft though.

And while we're at it... I think we need to get epicor to
support running the progress vantage database on *nix too.

Anti-MS blindness aside, you can make it as complex as you want. If you just
want text, pictures and links (i.e. no active server pages), its really easy
and you don't have to struggle with learning Linux. Unless you already know
Linux of course, then go with whichever you are comfortable with.

Whichever OS you decide to use, the best idea is start simple. For creating
web pages, many programs can save documents in HTML format. If you don't
want the server to do any work except store the pages for now, you don't
even need server software until you want to go to the next level.

I don't want to extol Microsoft's virtues but.....
If your not familiar with Linux or Apache, etc.
Microsoft web stuff works just find for intranets.

We have been using it for about 2 years with no problems.
We use ours for Vantage procedures, Engineering tables, etc.
It is not very complicated but it spreads internal information to everyone
with a PC on their desk.

We have used MS FrontPage to develop the pages.
It is simple to use and import existing data into.
(Pre-existing spreadsheets and Word files)

We've been running (sort of) an Intranet. It is not an official Intranet
yet because is not truly being run as a web server. I setup a mapped drive
"I:" for all users to a directory on the NT server. Then all I had to do
was setup my users browser's to open the main HTML page and go from there.
The HTML pages are written and developed here in many different ways, from
simple notepad, to user created and maintained pages with Word, Excel and
Publisher 2000, to Progress Provision Applications and Visual Basic programs
that generate charts and graphs, to the latest addition Report Builder
Reports to HTML files (the last two items run automatically on pc with a
scheduling program and update page information on a daily, weekly, monthly,
etc. basis depending on the frequency needed). All our pages are static,
since it is not really a web server there are no ASP pages yet, you can not
query the Intranet for information. This is planned for this year now that
the concept of an Intranet has proven worth while for our Company. We
currently have several hundred pages in the Intranet and this number is
growing every day. The total cost for this setup was $0 (just had to supply
the disk space on the NT server and start writing HTML pages).

I have one running on my workstation using the personal web server that
comes with Windows. Not real elegant, but gets the job done. Even have the
Crystal web server working with it to allow users to run reports accessing
the database real-time. It also keeps a log file so we can monitor usage.
I see that Ted mentioned it works great with revision-controlled documents.
We have a problem with people saving copies to their local drives or
printing them and those get out-dated. Our ISO auditor does not like it
when this occurs. Is there some functions that could assist us in
preventing either printing or saving to a local drive documents from an
intranet site? I have had some limited success with printing watermarks
such as "draft" or "uncontrolled" on printed copies, but would like a better
solution.

We just wrote into our procedures that any printed or saved copy was
unauthorized. Our auditor said that this was acceptable. I've read
somewhere that some changes can be made to the ASP code that will change the
format when the page is printed or saved, I'll try and uncover that and post
it.

There are other pieces of software capable of creating PDF's now which are
available for download (either shareware or freeware). Try a search on
'Acrobat Tools' on either Download.com or ZDNet.
