Todd,
We've been using the free version 6 of the AVG software for several
years on our production machines, and it's been great. Way back when,
the licensing was free to anyone/anywhere, but they have since
changed that to not being free for commercial use anymore. It's not
very configurable, but it also doesn't seem to affect Vantage or
anything else, it just sits in the background doing it's job.

Under things that shouldn't be column ...

One of our employees brought in a PC running Win-XP-Pro that was acting
"strange".

Norton Antivirus 2003 is on the machine and 100 % up to date. Runs clean on
a full sweep.

Machine also has Webroot Spysweeper ... it also run's clean.

Clearly though, something is "strange".

Downloaded a free copy of AVG anti-virus from www.grisoft.com and low and
behold - a number of viruses and Trojans are found and deleted. PC now
runs great.

Has anyone noticed major failures with the Norton Anti-Virus software of
late?

Is anyone using the GriSoft AVG anti-virus software on a production basis?

Thanks,

Todd Anderson
We also have a fellow who had trouble of a similar
nature with his XP-Pro machine at home.

www.hacker-eliminator.com

is the way he went.

Interesting talk about some sort of routine that comes
in through IRC and has, among other features, the ability
to shut down Norton AV.

Just another stop on Life's Great Smorgasbord I guess.

I have never cared for Norton. The best I've run into so far is PANDA.
Updates automatically, is friendly on software installs, notifies you if
something wants out, easily configured firewall. When I was running
multiple virus programs, I encountered, that even when fully updated
most packages didn't get all the virus's all the time. Except, Panda
would get them all. I used Trend, Sophos, and Norton. Also, I've
encountered a machine where it scanned clean for viri, spyware, and
Trojans. I finally tracked it down to REAL PLAYER SCHEDULER. This
unseen function was running from a legitimate install of Real Play.
Absolutely pegged the processor, blocked CD burning, blocked access to
certain internet sites, yadda yadda yadda. Needless to say Real Player
was purged. The system ran fine after that.
At the moment Panda is cool, but I'm fickle, I'll dump it in
a heartbeat if I find something better.

What about McAfee?

Panda was rated by far the best in a review I read a few months back. I
have been using McAfee here for over 2 years. McAfee Enterprise 7.0 is easy
to use, and seems fine. Earlier versions were EXTREMELY flaky. I'll be
watching Panda.

I don't like Norton because:
1. It has a bad attitude - I consider it a very obnoxious program, it
seems to take over any machine its installed on. Just try and install
something else once its installed
2. Its like a bad house guest - once installed just TRY and get rid of
it. What a pain, I've always wound up doing registry clean up to make
it finally leave.
3. It's the subject of gossip - Lots of bad reviews from lots of
unhappy users. Consistantly low scores on product reviews. Trend
always scores higher.
4. Doesn't do its job - Doesn't always find viri that it should.
5. It's a braggart - It screams that it's the most widely used. I
think a more correct statement is that it's the most widely marketed and
bundled. How many poor uninformed users are there that installed Norton
that came bundled with something else. Just because it's on a lot of
machines doesn't make up for lack of ability. How many of those touting
are really able to make an informed assessment of its capabilities.

And for the record, I don't care for ANY of Norton's offerings, I've
found better, cheaper applications for all of their stuff.

McAfee is ok, a bit wimpy but ok.

Hi Shirley,

I am curious why Norton has fallen from your favor.

It is so widely used, can so many be wrong?

What about McAfee?

Thanks,

I am still very happy with Trend Micro's products. In the last 5 years I
have been on it, I have never had an outbreak, or even an infection. I do
have quite a few notifications of interceptions, so I know it is working. I
thought I purchased a one or two year subsciption program, but it is still
running and updating itself at hourly intervals. Still kind of baffled
about that one, but I decided not to bring up the issue with Trend. I
recently had an issue where their "Pre Scan" for new installs errors out
when it encounters SP4 on WIN2K. That issue was resolved in minutes by
disabling Pre Scan.

Other than that, I love the product...

Paul
Thanks Shirley,

I will be looking into Panda.

I don't like Norton because:
1. It has a bad attitude - I consider it a very obnoxious program, it
seems to take over any machine its installed on. Just try and install
something else once its installed
2. Its like a bad house guest - once installed just TRY and get rid of

it finally leave.

Has anyone noticed major failures with the Norton Anti-Virus software of
late?

Is anyone using the GriSoft AVG anti-virus software on a production basis?

Thanks,

Todd Anderson

Wimpy? Wimpy? I'd gladly pay you tomorrow for an opinion today. Care to
elaborate, Shirley? As a McAfee user, it wouldn't hurt me to know the awful
truth. -Gary

I don't like Norton because:
1. It has a bad attitude - I consider it a very obnoxious program, it seems
to take over any machine its installed on. Just try and install something
else once its installed 2. Its like a bad house guest - once installed just
TRY and get rid of it. What a pain, I've always wound up doing registry
clean up to make it finally leave. 3. It's the subject of gossip - Lots of
bad reviews from lots of unhappy users. Consistantly low scores on product
reviews. Trend always scores higher. 4. Doesn't do its job - Doesn't
always find viri that it should. 5. It's a braggart - It screams that it's
the most widely used. I think a more correct statement is that it's the
most widely marketed and bundled. How many poor uninformed users are there
that installed Norton that came bundled with something else. Just because
it's on a lot of machines doesn't make up for lack of ability. How many of
those touting are really able to make an informed assessment of its
capabilities.

And for the record, I don't care for ANY of Norton's offerings, I've found
better, cheaper applications for all of their stuff.

McAfee is ok, a bit wimpy but ok.

Hi Shirley,

I am curious why Norton has fallen from your favor.

It is so widely used, can so many be wrong?

What about McAfee?

Thanks,

I have never cared for Norton. The best I've run into so far is PANDA.
Updates automatically, is friendly on software installs, notifies you if
something wants out, easily configured firewall. When I was running multiple
virus programs, I encountered, that even when fully updated most packages
didn't get all the virus's all the time. Except, Panda would get them all.
I used Trend, Sophos, and Norton. Also, I've encountered a machine where it
scanned clean for viri, spyware, and Trojans. I finally tracked it down to
REAL PLAYER SCHEDULER. This unseen function was running from a legitimate
install of Real Play. Absolutely pegged the processor, blocked CD burning,
blocked access to certain internet sites, yadda yadda yadda. Needless to
say Real Player was purged. The system ran fine after that.
At the moment Panda is cool, but I'm fickle, I'll dump it in a
heartbeat if I find something better.

PC now
runs great.

Todd,
We've been using the free version 6 of the AVG software for several
years on our production machines, and it's been great. Way back when,
the licensing was free to anyone/anywhere, but they have since
changed that to not being free for commercial use anymore. It's not
very configurable, but it also doesn't seem to affect Vantage or
anything else, it just sits in the background doing it's job.
