project and don't have the time to deal with investigating this on my own.

We have a Small Business Server 4.5 with Exchange Server handling all of our
incoming email. We are also running the corporate version of Symantec's
Anti-Virus software.

We were hit by the latest vbs virus; The anti-virus software didn't catch
it. Thank God it wasn't more destructive!

I want to block out any vbs files from even entering our network through our
Exchange Server. But I'm not very experienced with Exchange Server. How do
I block out email with these attachments that are occasionally viral? Third
party software? A simple setting in Exchange?

Anyone with any insight, please write me off list.

I did not want to keep this type of information from anyone, so I am sending
it to the entire list. I know many of the readers are also burndened with
network administration and some of you might not have heard of it...

In order to protect our network from e-mail and attachment worms I use
TrendMicro for Exchange ( www.trendmicro.com <http://www.trendmicro.com> ) .

The best feature of Trendmicro for Exchange is that it allows me in a very
easy way to block attachments based on file extensions. Of course, ever
since the original VBS Loveletter hit, I have been blocking and deleting all
VBS attachments, no matter how they have been disguised.

Now if I could get our employees to stop shunning me for blocking all their
.mpg, .avi, and .mp3 attachments....

You have virtually the same setup as I do and I too have been looking for
this. I thought I had heard there was a security patch to Exchange and/or
Outlook to do this. Justifying software purchases is very difficult so I
need something free. The closest I have come is a utility for exchange to
scan mailboxes and tell you which ones meet a criteria (subject,
attachments, etc..). In the mean time I educate, educate, educate. I also
removed the file connection to the extension .vbs from user PCs so .vbs
can't run automatically.

to Outlook 98 that prevents Outlook users from contracting and spreading
email viruses. It guards against viruses such as the ILOVEYOU Melissa and
NewLove viruses, as well as other viruses that spread themselves through
email, or worm viruses that can replicate through Outlook. Note that the
enhancements may affect the way you use Outlook and Office. For example, you
will no longer be able to open executable or other script-bearing file types
via email attachments. There will also be an added step in synchronizing
some handhelds with Outlook. Microsoft encourages all users of Outlook 98 to
install this update.

If you use outlook 98 or 2000 there is a security patch you can download for
free from Microsoft.

It will not allow any executable attachments at the client end so the users
can't run them. It does give the user a message that a file named -------
was attached to this e-mail but is being blocked........
