We have an old spreadsheet that we can't add any more columns to.

Which seems strange, as there are only about 40 columns in use on it.

If I try to add a column, I get an error message - "Cannot shift non-blank
cells off the worksheet".

Has anyone come across this before? I presume there is some setting in the
sheet that is causing this.

Thanks for any help.

Anton,
I had a problam almost like that. I just copied the
spread sheet and pasted into a new spread sheet and
that worked.

Excel may think that there is something in a cell out at the end of the
spreadsheet, so it won't let you insert any more. To check, press Ctrl+End.
This will jump you to what Excel *thinks* is the last cell. Its probably in
column IV.

Anyway, to fix your problem, select the first empty column in you sheet and
select all the way to column IV, then delete (not clear) the columns. That
will fix the problem.
