[Off Topic] Internet Mail Servers - Linux setup

You configure as you want, ISP's, permissions, logs, scope, file sizes and
types.

Almost idiot-proof, I'm the proof!

Does it handle your External @... email accounts? You have your ISP
forwarding all the email to your local machine? No attachment limits, etc?

Jim

Before you go blind try http://www.kyzo.com/ we've been using one of their
N-I-N boxes for over two years - not one problem and it uses IE as the
administrator interface.

The Exchange proposal got killed here due to cost. I have since installed
Linux (Red Hat) and have purchased 2 books one on Linux and one on sendmail.
I'm sitting at a black and white screen with a cursor.DOS flashback. With
everything going on I can't get time to sit down and figure out how to
change directories much less configure the mail server portion. Anyone have
any suggestions for quick setups that I can test before having our ISP route
mail here internally. Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks

I'd have to agree with Michael about setting up your own in-house mail
server. We use exchange server here. A bit of an expense but once set up
the only outside problem you might have is that your isp is down, otherwise
you pretty well control the deal from your end. We've been running it for
almost 4 years and I have no real complaints.

Why not setup your own internal mail server. MDaemon is easy and cheap to
setup, or perhaps a Linux solution. You then can have as many accounts as
you want for no cost, no limit on the size of messages (if you want),
control your own distribution groups, restrict some people to only sending
messages internally, and best of all you get messages delivered at full LAN
speed at no cost. Most IPSs offer a backup post office facility so that if
your server is unavailable the messages will get delivered to your ISP and
when your server comes back on line the messages are then sent to your
server.

Another option is to use a place like Register.com. The will register your
internet name and then allow you 5 free e-mail accounts and you can purchase
additional accounts for very low $$$. This works out nice because you own
your domain name and can transfer it from place to place or even bring it
in-house. I have set up several smaller companies to use this.

Interland. None give what I'd call stellar performance. But I'd give
Interland an 80% (I'm a tough grader) and an "E" for effort. Nobody else
I've had contact with even came close to that. Pretty good tech support -
human voice and don't have to wait. And an incident escalation system that
seems to fix most problems. $650 a year. Not too much downtime. Simple
mail admin interfaces. I'm sure there are other good ones - and you could
spend your whole life looking.

For what it's worth,

Jim,

An Exchange proposal was killed here as well. I have also recommend the
N-I-N box. We have had it installed since February. I have only restarted
it to add functionally.
Its only 400 pounds with file, fax and internal web serving. Additionally
v4.01 just was released last night. They update the kernels and the ability
to add VPN services. Try it out for 3 months and make management love it.
It worked for me.

What I would recommend as a test environment is to go to one of the "dynamic
dns" web sites and register yourself a domain and create an MX record.
There are lots of free providers for this service, just type "dynamic dns"
in google. I'm trying to study for the Exchange 2000 exam and I used
www.no-ip.com and created a host eg example.no-ip.com with an MX record to
the same place. You can set the host to point to any IP address and you can
change it via a web page or download their software (WIN / LINUX) to do it
automatically.

Once you do this you can send mail to blah@...-ip.com from anywhere
on the planet and it looks up the DNS MX record for example.no-ip.com and
then an attempts to establish an SNMP session to your box.

I'd love to evaluate a Linux solution also, but if you are not experienced
in Linux I would give MDaemon a go. You can get a 30 day copy from
www.altn.com . Only $660 for 50 users, $880 for 100 users, factor in a
workstation running W2KPro and it's a cheap solution. I'd love to run
exchange for the collaboration (eg public folders, address book, calenders,
delegate access, etc), but I just can't justify the cost.
