[Off Topic] Internet Speeds

In our little area DSL is not available yet. The quotes we've received for a Fractional T1 have been quite expensive. Sat may be our best option at this point.

I have to agree with John on this one. I went with a 256k fractional T1
rather than DSL when we broke up the corporate WAN . One main reason is DSL
in our area was very unreliable at the time because I had it installed at my
house. It was worth the extra money over DSL for the TI, which was actually
cheaper than we were paying for the Sprint 56k frame relay. I don't regret
the decision yet as it has been rock solid, both reliability and speed
(except for when the truck took out the pole last summer), no problems with
large downloads ala Vantage and Progress patches, the CO can actually do
monitoring on the line conditions for us, and at any time we can crank up
the speed to 512k, 784k, or full 1.54mbps with just a phone call.

One of our vendors does an on-site vendor managed inventory and they have a
DSL line here and use VPN to connect to their main office. That connection
has been nothing but trouble, so I'm still happy with the decision.

Just my $.02
Rick

So I would be correct in saying that Directway is 2X faster than DSL on downloads, and about the same as DSL on uploads? And compared to 56Kbps, it would be 7X to 20X faster?

How fast is a T1 in Kbps? Does anyone know?

Directway advertises an average of 400kbs download, I usually average about
600kbs, have hit 800kbs when net traffic was low and have hit 1100kbs in the
wee hours. Last week I downloaded a 34 megabyte file in 1.45 minutes.
Upload is a consistant 128kbs.

Thanks for the bit/byte education, Robert. That was worth the whole thread
for me. We're looking at internet access speeds and I see a 384kbps and
think WOW! Is that the same measurement as 56K? In other words, is a
384kbps download speed actually 6.9 times faster than 56K, and is 128Kbps
4.5 times faster than 28.8?

And Shirley, what is the download/upload performance on your two-way
Satellite internet service?

Hi Dina,

If your boss is like mine, he wants numbers. A simple NO will never
work.
My DSL service is a basic package. Yours may be similar.

384kbps - 1.5mbps download speed - coming into my computer.
128kbps going out of my computer.
That's bits per second, not bytes. (from old teletype days)
I don't know if DSL uses start and stop bits, but I'll assume it does.
Figure 8 data bits, 1 start bit and 1 stop bit gives you a 10 to 1
ratio
of bits to bytes.
Now figure a 2 gigabyte file like many Vantage databases.
2,000,000,000 bytes or 20,000,000,000 bits. divide by 128,000 bits per
second.
You get 156,250 seconds or 2,604 min. or 43.4 hours. - Almost 2 days !
Not very practical. Tape backup with off site storage will be the most
efficient.

Bob Bruton

If I messed up the numbers - please enlighten me.

Little b bits, Big B Bytes.
Upgrading may be very worthwhile. Even if DSL is not available many
carriers are very hungry right now. Frame Relay on a T1 with a DSL type
speed can be justified pretty easily if you send receive very much in the
way of large email attachments to/from customers.

Thanks for the bit/byte education, Robert. That was worth the whole

for me. We're looking at internet access speeds and I see a 384kbps
and
think WOW! Is that the same measurement as 56K? In other words, is a
384kbps download speed actually 6.9 times faster than 56K, and is

And Shirley, what is the download/upload performance on your two-way

Hi Dina,

If your boss is like mine, he wants numbers. A simple NO will

My DSL service is a basic package. Yours may be similar.

384kbps - 1.5mbps download speed - coming into my computer.
128kbps going out of my computer.
That's bits per second, not bytes. (from old teletype days)
I don't know if DSL uses start and stop bits, but I'll assume it

Figure 8 data bits, 1 start bit and 1 stop bit gives you a 10 to
1
ratio
of bits to bytes.
Now figure a 2 gigabyte file like many Vantage databases.
2,000,000,000 bytes or 20,000,000,000 bits. divide by 128,000
bits per
second.
You get 156,250 seconds or 2,604 min. or 43.4 hours. - Almost 2
days !
Not very practical. Tape backup with off site storage will be the

One of our clients has been able to obtain a "business class" DSL service
providing 5Mb downstream and 1.5Mb upstream for a fraction of the cost of
T1. It's my understanding that some providers are offering this service in
major urban areas but it is usually not highly advertised since it obviously
would erode their Frame Relay revenues.

We have a full dedicated T-1 and are paying $800 a month total (data line
and Telco circuit). We have remote sites and figured that a 384K frame
relay would handle the load in almost all situations but for $100.00 extra a
month I quadrupled the bandwidth. I use Verio, switching recently from
PSINet. We only signed a 1-year contract because we want to be assured of
their performance first but had we signed a multi-year deal we would have
dropped up to $150. 00 a month.

Hope that helps with the comparison.

Troy,

Even though T1 speeds don't necessarily seem as high as DSL or
Cable, T1 circuits are synchronous in terms of throughput (upload
and download speeds are near identical) and they suffer from far
less latency (basically the time between packets). So the net(!)
effect is that T1s are much faster, especially for large transfers.

have fun,
john

Just my $.02
Rick

The most overriding benefit to a sat connection, besides cost and speed, is
that for many of us in the boonies, there IS no other option. In our
particular area its 56kbs modem or 400kbs sat. There lies its biggest
advantage.

Does anyone use modem "bonding"? I heard that it is pretty effective and cheap, but I don't know anything else (about it). I would assume that the ISP would have to be compatible as well?

Rick,

multi-link PPP is doable under NT and 2000... not an option under 95 or 98.

Configuring multiple device dialing

The Network and Dial-up Connections feature performs PPP Multilink dialing over multiple ISDN, X.25, or modem lines. The feature combines multiple physical links into a logical bundle and the resulting aggregate link increases your connection bandwidth. To dial multiple devices, both your connection and your remote access server must have Multilink enabled.

Network and Dial-up Connections can dynamically control the use of multilinked lines. By allocating lines only as they are required, thereby eliminating excess bandwidth, you can realize a significant efficiency advantage. You can configure the conditions under which extra lines are dialed, and underused lines are hung up, through Network and Dial-up Connections settings.

Rick,

If I remember right, isn't modem-bonding a dial-up connection on standard
phone lines? I think you have to still buy some equipment up front for
that. And then there's the messing around factored in. If it's available a
fractional T1 still sounds like the most invisible, solid and useful way to
go right now to me. Throw in an automatic cut-over to a 56K modem from the
router in case the T1 is lost, and you're never out of business. I really
appreciate having our T1. It has removed a lot of our communications
hurdles. The parent company is following suit.
