[Off Topic] MS licensing trivia

I am also converting exchange 5.5 to 2003. I read somewhere that
outlook2003 does NOT interface with previous versions of Office, (probably
because 2003 imbeds XML support). our users are configured to use msword
for the outlook editor (spellchecking, etc.), so I am assuming there is
going to be a problem if we upgrade them to outlook2003. I was not going to
use outlook2003 until I verified it would interface with older versions of
msword. (otherwise would require 80 office2003 upgrade licenses!). those
free outlook licenses might not be as inexpensive as you think.

Just purchased MS-Exchange-2003-Server with 80 user CAL's.

We are currently using MS-Office-2000. I wasn't planning on purchasing
Office-2003 due to the price but wished I could just get Outlook-2003.

Shazaam - When I received my Exchange-2003 open license media kit it
included Outlook-2003 which struck me as strange because I've always thought
it was part of the Office Suite.

Then I started reading the fine print in the 120 page license agreement and
low and behold those 80 user's CALS for Exchange INCLUDE Outlook-2003.

And yet when I tried to install Outlook-2003 it wanted a product key while
Exchange 2003 does NOT require one.

Hmmmmm, ok, next step was to call MS to see how I could get the license key
for Outlook-2003. Nice guy on the phone who didn't seem to know what I was
asking until I read him the paragraph from the license agreement. Oh - that
- 20 seconds later I've got the license key.

So if you're running Office-2000 and are considering upgrading to
Exchange-2003 don't think you need to upgrade Office to get the matching
Outlook-2003.

Odd thing is that Office-2003 DOES include Outlook-2003 and SO DOES the
Exchange-2003 user CAL. Look's like it's either free or if you buy both you
just double paid for Outlook-2003. Curious.

Ok - that's my weird MS licensing trivia for the day.

Outlook was included with previous versions of Exchange as well, the logic
being that you would want to use Outlook then instead of Lotus or something.
