The first versions of Win95 send passwords in clear text. Win95b and on send their passwords encrypted.
There is a setting in the registry (and/or patch) to fix this on older Win95 clients, I just don't remember what it is. Check out Microsoft's knowledge base and or www.samba.org (it is detailed on that site as well). Either should provide the answers you need.
