[Off Topic] Norton Antivirus

Actually, I wrote this little registry entry that adds an exclusion for
drive V: and also c:\vntgwork. We are using Norton Corporate 7.5 with NT4
and Win95, but I think it will work with other versions of Windows and
Norton corporate. Just run this on each client station.

If you are not already familiar with how to edit the registry, I wouldn't
suggest you use this.

REGEDIT4
<blank line>
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Intel\LANDesk\VirusProtect6\CurrentVersion\Stor
ages\Filesystem\RealTimeScan\NoScanDir]
"C:\\vntgwork"=dword:00000001
"V:"=dword:00000001
<blank line>

Make sure there is nothing but a carriage return on the lines I marked as
<blank line>. Just put this into notepad and save it as ExcludeV.reg.

Hi Everyone,

We are in the process of installing a T1 line in our building. I am
planning on purchasing Norton Enterprise Antivirus for our Server and
Workstations; currently we have Norton on individual work stations taht
have internet access. What I need to know is how it should be set-up as
to not slow down Vantage.

Thanks

You should remove Norton on all the indivdual workstations. Install the
centralized management console and install to all machines from there.
Do no have it scan network drives. That should prevent it from slowing
down vantage.

When I''ve configured the "realtime virus scanning" to exclude the mapped
drive to Vantage it speeds up logging in and other functions enough that I
believe it is no longer causing any slowdown in Vantage.

Janet,

I agree with Jasper and Todd. You'll definitely have to configure it not to scan network drives. You'll have to dig a little to find this checked option in the software.

Take a look at the support options available with Norton. Ours included 1
year of tech support. Their tech support was extremely helpful in setting
Norton up. We have two servers and 20 workstations. They knew to not scan
the network drives and databases without any prompting from my end. You pay
for it, but it was nice to have them around. Norton can be tough to set up
the first time. Been there, done that, was having problems before I
realized we had also purchased the support with the software. One of those
happy mistakes.

We are running Norton Anti Virus 2003. It should have an option
window that has an "Exclusions" selection. Then "Auto Protect".If you
choose this it should have a line to input files to be skipped when
auto scanning. We exclude the following: *.dbx, *.dbf, *.db, *.vtg,
prowin32.exe, V:\ (v being the mapped network drive that vantage is
installed on), *.prl, and any other files you don't want Norton to
scan. See if this works for you, and saves you some money not having
symantec do it for you! Let me know if this helps

Sorry It should have options, auto protect, then exclusions
