Games and such arent such a problem here. When I discover a game on the
network, I delete it and tell the user "dont". The next time they do it I
cut off their network access. No email, no network files nothing but whats
on their (now) stand alone machine. When they cry to bosses THEY can
explain why the games are there. I havent had an incident in years.

Policy editor can control what programs are allowed to run on a system.
You
have to make a list of what programs the computer (or user) is allowed to
run, which is a bit of a pain on systems that are not dedicated to one
program, but it will work.

We are on the other side of this fence-we use standard costing for our
manufactured parts, so the current method is exactly the way the accountant
wants it-all the better to track variances and adjust standard costs.

I am looking for a document that we can make our employees sign that
notifies them that they cannot load any software on a company PC. All
installs will be done by the computer department. If anyone has one of
these or any company policy documents that relate to games being played etc.
I would appreciate having them to use as a guide in developing our company
documents.

When a policy isn't enough, then what. We have always had a policy that
games are not to be played during work hours. Ever since disabling Napster
at the firewall, more and more people are sneaking in games. Last week our
president said that there are too many complaints about people playing games
during the work day. So I am now employing a visual basic application I
conjured up over the weekend. I call it "AppZap". Its a small program that
runs in the background on the desktop. I dumped it to the network policy
under "Run at startup" so that it is automatically loaded on all desktops as
soon as they startup the computer. It simply monitors for the signature
files of "Solitaire", "FreeCell", "Minesweeper" and "Quake III: Arena".
Should it find one of these games running on the pc between 7:00 am - 11:30
am (lunch) 12:30 pm - 5:00 pm on Monday through Friday, it will popup a
timed message box stating the company policy for playing computer games.
Closing the popup window (or after 10 seconds it self closes) will also
close the game. Now to fix those smarty-pants people who think they can
Ctrl-Alt-Del and end task my application so they can play! Close my app and
it reboots your windows! This seems drastic, but I've run out of ideas.
What is everyone doing to keep people from playing games, and other types of
non-productive activities during work hours?

Mike's idea is really clever, but the problem with using any sort of "tools"
or "filters" is that some people will find a way around it. On the other
hand, if a policy is in place and enough people get written up (or fired),
the games will stop. I think its called "giving them enough rope to hang
themselves with".
As for our company, we worked the policy into the last revision of the
employee handbook.
Incidentally, on anything you are going to make employees sign, check to see
what recourse you have if they refuse to sign.

Not a problem here. We use game-sniffing dogs who attach anyone playing solitaire.

We have taken a different approach, we have locked down our PC's and made
stanardized Profiles. When we put a PC into service all games are removed,
the user Profile disables the floppy and in some cases the CD's depending on
your access priveledges. The complete desktop is customized (configured) so
that it is not possible to install outside programs. Since controlling the
desktops our "Help Desk" /repair issues have all but gone away.
We also monitor web games through Elron's Internet Manager and we do have a
computer usage policy which everyone must sign who has internet or email
access. If they don't agree with the terms and conditions they do not get
access.

We started out with the no floppy/CD ROM as well. We then added the Elron
Software and strip all .exe, .zip and others from being delivered to the
users. We are also running Win2000 clients and we "hide" the C: drive from
users. All other mappings are static and can not be changed. My system
administrator tells me if we need to, we can actually generate an approved
"Run" list and limit what programs a workstation can run. We have not had to
go there yet. We do not have any hackers here so far so our life has been
somewhat easier than most.
