[Off Topic] Quiet day survey

I work from 5:30 am till 5 pm 5 days a week. One hour lunch.
Many Saturdays, plus occasional late nights, Sunday server visits, etc.

I received zero increase this year.

Last year was 2%

The prior, zero increase.

I'm thinkin' four days a week, every other, at the same pay would be
glorious!

Seems like a slow day so out of curiosity:

* Would you forgo a 10% pay increase in exchange for 1 day off every 2
weeks year round? Vacation and Holiday days stay the same. Or, to put it
another way, which is more valuable to you these days - time or money?

* Would you forgo a 10% pay increase for a written employment contract
guarantying your job for 1 year and specifying the termination terms in the
event that the company chose not to renew the contract? As in, you would
not have to worry about your job being downsized for 1 year and if the
company decided not to renew you would have it in writing that you were to
receive x # of weeks of severance. What value does job security have to
you?

10% is a pretty nice bump. It would be hard to say no to that. I
have more Vacation time than I'm able to use right now so I wouldn't
need that, and only 1 year of security isn't that much, I guess it
would depend on the size of the severance and how stable I felt the
company was. Right now I really think things are starting to improve
here so I'm not worried about the next year. Give me the Green, Baby!

I'll take the time off. In fact a nice 4 month sabbatical in the Caribbean
would be the perfect escape from the approaching MN. winter. I have not
heard of many people on their death bed wishing they would of worked more.

I did not use all of my 2.1 weeks vacation last year and 1 yr is not much
security.
I would take the 10% quick before it moved.

With three kids in college & grad school - if I had an extra day off I'd have to fill it with another job, probably at less pay, so I'd definitely take the raise.

Tuition not withstanding, a 10% increase would make a good addition to a "rainy day" fund with which to ride out job transitions. Plus with the economy seeming to rebound inter-job duration should be shorter - especially if you have a lot of confidence in your hirability.

Finally - employment "at will" may be risky sometimes but contracts cut both ways - typically restricting ability to accept a better employment situation.

On the other hand....a 10% raise is really only a 5-6% raise after fed, state taxes and Soc. Sec/Medicare. Unless you put the whole thing in a tax deferred savings plan (like 401k).

I would still take the dough in both cases.

Seems like a slow day so out of curiosity:

* Would you forgo a 10% pay increase in exchange for 1 day off every 2

another way, which is more valuable to you these days - time or money?

* Would you forgo a 10% pay increase for a written employment contract
guarantying your job for 1 year and specifying the termination terms in

would
not have to worry about your job being downsized for 1 year and if the

With three kids in college & grad school - if I had an extra day off I'd
have to fill it with another job, probably at less pay, so I'd
definitely take the raise.

Tuition not withstanding, a 10% increase would make a good addition to a
"rainy day" fund with which to ride out job transitions. Plus with the
economy seeming to rebound inter-job duration should be shorter -
especially if you have a lot of confidence in your hirability.

Finally - employment "at will" may be risky sometimes but contracts cut
both ways - typically restricting ability to accept a better employment
situation.

On the other hand....a 10% raise is really only a 5-6% raise after fed,
state taxes and Soc. Sec/Medicare. Unless you put the whole thing in a
tax deferred savings plan (like 401k).

I would still take the dough in both cases.

About 18 months ago I took a 20% cut for a 4 day week.
It was my request.
I think it is wonderful.
I still get a smaller annual increase.

Interesting the different views.

* Would you forgo a 10% pay increase in exchange for 1 day off every 2

another way, which is more valuable to you these days - time or money?

* Would you forgo a 10% pay increase for a written employment contract
guarantying your job for 1 year and specifying the termination terms in the
event that the company chose not to renew the contract? As in, you would
not have to worry about your job being downsized for 1 year and if the
company decided not to renew you would have it in writing that you were to
receive x # of weeks of severance. What value does job security have to
you?

I'll take the time off! I have asked for something similar around here, but no go. They tell me that they "can't afford to have me off". If that's the case then I need more money if I am so valuable.

I like to travel and my husband's work schedule is more conducive to this than my schedule. I would definitely forego the raise for time off.

I even suggested that during the summer months letting people earn a day off -- work 8 - nine hour days and earn a day off in the middle of the week. Still no go!

Guarantee.... I don't know?!
