Off topic: RAID

I use an Adaptec Raid controller with seagate drives. You can build the
mirror set on the fly using the adaptec software but it is better to have
the server offline. When we upgraded to raid 5 from 1 it took about 2 hours
to change. It all depends on how fast the drives and computer are.

I am in the learning stages of RAID systems and configuration. Can someone
help me out on this question:

If I have a single scsi drive set up on it's own array as a RAID 0 (at the
time I was not sure what I would do with this drive), can I add an equal
drive to the array and make it a RAID 1 (mirrored set) without destroying
the data already on the original drive?

It seems to me that this is what the system would have been designed for,
but the little literature I have on RAID doesn't describe this scenario.

BTW, using adaptec hardware and software with seagate drive.

Thank you,

Yes, you should be able to build the mirror on the fly. We have two
mirrored disks and a third "warm" spare where if one side of the mirror
fails the system will automatically build on the spare and allow the
deffective drive to be hot-swapped (seperate hardware capability). A lot
would depend on the Adaptec software and I would not have a clue how to
configure your version but mirror building (or rebuilding) on the fly has
been a pretty basic feature of RAID 1setups for many years. The "how to"
ought to be in the Adaptec software manual/help file or at their web site.
