Off Topic - Server Drive Configuration

If it helps, I converted from 3 to 5 and in the process set up a raid 10
(IDE drives). I don't know what Progress or Vantage says about this type of
raid, but it is running just fine here, and I have been pleased with the
performance.

Good luck,

Jeremy,

Just so I'm getting this correct: RAID 10 = RAID 1 + 0, or mirroring plus
striping. I do have a RAID card and 10 drive backplane. If Progress is ok
with RAID 10 I will most likely do that with my four drives, especially if
it improves performance and I don't need the storage capacity. We have 42
users and they are always complaining "the system is slow today".

Thanks,
Rick

Christmas has come early for me! I'm in the process right now of setting up
our new server for 5.1. I was just wondering how everyone sets up their
drives and partitions. This server is unique for me in that I actually have
multiple physical drives that I can span data across.

I have two 10k, 9gb drives in RAID 1 and an additional four 15k, 18gb drives
that will form two arrays in RAID 1 also. I will be installing Windows 2000
Server and I traditionally make all partitions NTFS on servers. I was
planning on a 2gb system partition on the 9gb array but after that it is
fair game. Our database will expand to about 1.5gb with the updates from
3.0. My plan was to install all Progress and Vantage code on an 18gb array
and just leave the other two 18gb drives in the cabinet or in the backplane
for spares.

Any comments, suggestions, concerns on the best way to configure this stuff?

Thanks,
Rick
When I attended a progress database administration class years back they
said you could gain performance by splitting the data base across multiple
drives and the corresponding bi file on a different drive such as first set
of mirrored drives have .d1 and .b2 files the second set of drives has .d2
and .b1 files. I'm not aware of anyone doing this, maybe my information is
outdated, but it may be something you want to look into.

have fun

Patrick

I spend some time on this issue with Progress support about 6 months ago.
They suggests two logical drives. One for your boot partition. The raid
level should be 1 using 2 physical drives. The second logical drive should
be RAID 10 using 4 physical drives. After I made the change to RAID 10 I
seen a huge speed increase. If you don't have a raid card you should invest
in one. Windows still uses allot of overhead to maintain software raid.
Thanks
Jeremy
I would leave at least 3gb in your first partition for OS, I have some NT
systems that are pushing hard against the 2GB partitions.

I don't think this is even .02 worth.
