If you have an Exchange server, look at Sybari's Antigen. It scans mail for
virus and filters attachments. This summer they are suppose to have their
Content scanner done and it will be considered part of the software. You
don't have to buy it separately. I am trying a demo copy now and I think it

One FREE option is using the "Rules" in Outlook or Outlook Express. For instance, I get emails all the time about casino's, etc. So I can make a rule that if the word "casino" is in the body of the message (or the subject), I can send it to a special folder. I use a 'spam' folder for cases where I may want to see the message before I delete it, but don't want it in my inbox. Or I can delete emails from the rules if I want. Another option is to "block sender" if there are emails coming from one particular person or company.

Do the SPAM email's come from the same external address and go to the same
internal address routinely ?

If so, I can explain how you can block sending and receiving of emails
between an internal and a specific external email address.

Or, from a specific email address to ANY internal email address ....

I use this technique all the time to block personal emails at work. The
logic is plain Exchange server ... It's just not a documented feature ...

Actually we're not using any type of "mail" server persay. I'm routing our
shared 56k dial-up access through the NAT on my server.

I use the Outlook rules feature to send all the Vantage "Spam" I get into a
specific folder by searching for the phrase " Vantage" or "[vantage" if you
don't put the leading space , then any E-Mail containing "advantage" will be
moved to the folder as well.

But seriously folks, thanks for all your questions and answers in this
wonderful E-Group. I'm just getting my feet wet doing Vantage support and
report writing, and I'm learning alot every day just by reading my e-mail.

So you're sending and receiving via your ISP's servers? You might ask
them if they have an alternate server you can use that is configured with
any aggressive rules to reject spam. This also runs the risk of rejecting
some email from legit senders.

The SMTP server can be configured to reject mail from IP addresses with no
valid reverse name lookup, invalid domain names for the server or sender,
etc. If you want to get real aggressive, you can use the "black list"
databases like maps or orbs to and have your server reject anything that is
on their list.

If you're trying to filter it out at your desktop email client, there's not
much you can do. Even if you do manage to screen things out by the subject
line or whatever, you've already been penalized the time required to
download to your PC.

That's where the real spam comes from - bogus 'reply to' addresses, invalid domain names.... If I could filter out those emails that are not otherwise traceable, I would almost be in heaven (at my home pc, that is).

and install Norton AntiVirus for Gateways on it. That's what I am in the
process of doing as soon as I can get MS Proxy on Windows 2000 Server to
work and DNS set up.
