[Off Topic] Summer temperatures

My room is above 80 during the summer. Hit 86 yesterday.

I was just on APC's website this morning. They have a small unit
for under $1000. It seems to only require a warm air discharge.
The BTU rating is on the low side, but it may help a little and the
price isn't like installing a totally separate A/C system.

Lucky if I can maintain it below 80. Very poor location without seperate cooling system. Mostly I leave the door open all day. Constant issue with building maintenance people and requests to CEO to do something to improve it. On the other hand it has not seemed to harm anything over the long haul so perhaps components are more tolerant. I would be more worried about wide swings in temp than a somewhat high constant temp. It was a lot worse with two NT servers and switches in there along with the ancient AS/400 (what a heater!) and the Twin-Axial hubs but the old stuff is gone now so it has helped.

Todd,

I'm with you there. My office/computer-room is 75-85 most of the time. I
have the "open-door" air-conditioner too. Not my preference. They wouldn't
spring for real A/C. I keep the door tied open. Summer is OK while A/C is
running in rest of building, but gets a little warm in winter with the heat
turned on. 3 years like this and everything has been OK. Components are
tougher than I had thought.

Stay cool,

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like I'm not alone in having a warm room for
my servers.

I checked with Dell - Their servers are rated 50-95 degrees F

IBM rates the AS/400 we have as 50-100 degrees F

Our room hit 88 F yesterday.

Curious thing is that both the Dell and IBM techs I talked to groaned about
the 88 F number. They both thought 68-72 was "Desirable". But neither
could find anything in writing stating that cooler temperatures were
"optimal".

Seems like equipment these days is just built to handle higher temps then
the stuff we all grew up on.
