If you are just looking for a simple device to test if a cable is good or not there are several brands for under $100.00 that work well. I use a device made by MicroTest called a Micro Mapper. You can see all available devices by searching "cable testers" on the web, (i.e. www.cdw.com)

Any suggestions for type-5 cable testers?
Currently considering Fluke MT-8200-32A for about $ 399.
