[off topic] - Virtual Adapters

ok that makes sense. Thanks much.

WatchDog is only on the Maxtor. As far as I know, Maxtor is the only NAS
that put's a complete OS (W2K Server) on their system.

Is the watchdog only for Maxtor or is it for O/S? If for O/S where do I get
that from?

Maxtor has a special agreement with Microsoft. They put a fully functional
version of W2K server on the NAS, but the license agreement that comes with
the server (that you have to agree to) says you will only use it for file
serving purposes. It does allow you to put backup software on the NAS, but
you can't use it as a Printer server or a Web server (for example).

The most important patch is the Watchdog timer patch. This program runs on
the NAS. If it doesn't get a response from the NAS after a certain period
of time, it reboots the NAS. If the NAS is experiencing heavy network
traffic, the Watchdog would sometimes reboot the NAS immediately. The patch
fixes this problem. There is also an update SFU (for sharing files with
Unix-based machines).

The Maxtor NAS's can only be used for file storage "legally". Otherwise,
they're full W2K Servers. "If" you were going to use it for Vantage, I
think you'd have to install all of the Vantage server software on the NAS.
I wouldn't recommend this - the NAS only has a Celeron processor (PIII
equivalent) and wasn't meant to run a database directly. The performance
would be terrible. I'm not sure if you can have a Vantage server as a
seperate machine, but store your database on the NAS (doubtful). That would
be a question for Tech Support.

The only thing I'd recommend to you is - install the patches!!! Install the
standard Windows patches and the ones that Maxtor has. Our NAS rebooted
itself the very first day, but it was because of a known bug. We installed
all of the patches and it's been running perfect ever since.

HELP!!

I apologize for the stupid question but this network stuff - is
learning in progress. I am trying to attach a NAS device to my
Windows 2000 Server. I am terminal service into the nas device.

When I go to Network Connectoins - I see the following

Local Area Connection 1(Intel 1000T Server)
Local Area Connection 2(Intel Pro/100+ Server Adapter)
Local Area Connection 3
Local ARea Connection 4 (Intel Advanced Network Services Virtual
Adapter)

LAC #2 if you go under properties for this one it does not show TCP/IP
installed.
LAC #4 does show TCP/IP installed.

If i unplug lac #2 - #4 automatically disconnects with it.

Now my question is what is the purpose of this virtual adapter?

Again, sorry for the dump question - but as i stated my networking
abilities are in constant progress. and I am just beginning.

Thanks
Dina
The virtual adapter is an "adaptive team" and used for load balancing or
fail-over (one adapter quits, the other takes over). Looking at your
information, I'd say you have 2 100bT NIC's that are set up as an adaptive
team with the Intel software. It also looks like you have an additional
Gigabit Ethernet adapter (LAC1). If your switch can't handle adaptive
teams, you will have to disable that feature using Intel's software... OR
... you could just plug LAC1 into the network and use that. Then you
wouldn't have to mess with any configuration changes. To modify TCP/IP
settings, you would use LAC1. If you're going to use the virtual adapter,
both NIC's must be plugged into the switch, then configure the TCP/IP
settings for the virtual adapter (LAC4). Don't mess with LAC2 or LAC3.

What kind of NAS do you have? This looks like the same setup our Maxtor NAS
has.

Chris,

Opps - i was wrong. I thought my boss stated he was going to use that for Vantage. When I showed him your email - he gave me a funny look and said "I didn't want to put
Vantage on that". But thanks for all the information.

It helped alot.

I thought the NAS was not a full server and was only the kernel? What
patches are you referring to?

We installed
all of the patches and it's been running perfect ever since.

on using it for Vantage. Any problems with yours? Or any heads up I

Is the watchdog only for Maxtor or is it for O/S? If for O/S where do I get
that from?

I thought the NAS was not a full server and was only the kernel? What
patches are you referring to?

Chris -

It is a Maxtor 4300. We just purchased it a couple days ago. I am planning
on using it for Vantage. Any problems with yours? Or any heads up I
should know.
