[off topic] Virus Software Pricing

Thad,

We use Norton here and I love it. It is very easy to install and control
the users. Virus updates are totally automatic.

Ditto. NAV Corporate is doing its job well for us. Just make sure to turn
off client scanning of vantage directory. (though you can still include it
in a nightly system-wide scan).

Just like any software, it must be properly configured for your environment
in order to work properly.

I am interested in hearing why people will call Norton Anti Virus a VIRUS. I
understand frustration with other norton products. We've discontinued use
of Norton Utilities, as it was a source of unreliability on our NT4
workstations. However, their antivirus software has saved us alot of grief.

Not to say that the less costlier products won't suit your needs.

I am looking for new virus protection software package. What can you folks
recommend and where's a good place to get it cheap? I priced Symantec
Corporate but it seemed high from CDW. $35.05 for each computer same price
for servers vs. Pc's. We have 4 servers and 25 pc's, we use Exchange for
email on two servers. Any input appreciated.

Has anyone had problems with the Yahoo group today? I hadn't got any emails
all day then sent this one to only have it come back with this:

We are unable to deliver the message from <dmann@...>
to <vantage@yahoogroups.com>.

Your email account has been bouncing mails. This means that emails
sent to your account over several days have been returned to us.
This is sometimes because mail boxes are filled up, or because of
configuration problems. To reset your Yahoo! Groups account, please go
to http://groups.yahoo.com/myprefs?edit=2

When I logged in it had the wrong email address set up on my account,
strange!!

Thanks

It seemed like I wasn't getting the emails either. But I guess it's a slow

I've compared Norton, InoculateIT, and Trend PCcillin. Cost wise, Trend is
the best bang for the buck, User Wise: Cnet's User pole gove: Norton a 39%
positive, InoculateIT 64% positive, Trend PcCillin 74% positive. My
personal experience: Norton: Norton IS a virus, InoculateIT: Better than
Norton, Trend: Stable, and rarely talks out of turn.
The most cost effective value to me is Trend.

I would agree with Shirley. I believe I have a lic for 50 users and one
Exchange lic for Norton that you can have if its transferable. We dumped
the product shortly after I took over this department. We run InoculateIT
now. Its much better then Norton but I can't say its been trouble free
either.

Shirley,

Are there any freeware desktop solutions that would work. This virus
software has gotten so pricey with their annual subscription BS. They must
all take lessons from the big software companies, but we won't talk about
those maintenance costs. What ever happen to the days of free updates and
quality tech support? Now everyone is charging for everything including
just keeping the software working....

This licensing stuff is crazy. You buy paper that costs more than going out
and buying the product. CDW wanted $35.05 for norton corp. per user and
can go out and buy it off the shelf for $9.99 to 19.99 with manuals and
CD's. Shouldn't corporate licensing run less than the off the shelf
software? They don't need a box, manuals, or media.. No costs at all. I
don't get it.

Sorry for the rant... I feel better ;-)

Best Regards,
Darren

Which versions of their product do you use and could you explain why you use
the free scan page. Is that for computers that do not have licenses? What
email client do you use and are you scanning/filtering email?

Thanks

Right now, our email server (Avirt Mail) Scans the email traffic, I'm using
ComTun as my software firewall (our access is by Two Way satellite). The
gateway machine is scanned several times a day using a desktop version of
PCCillian. I was using Zone Alarm as a firewall, but its most recent
revision created issues that caused my gateway to crash. So I've dropped it
for the time being. The gateway is pretty isolated on the network so virus'
that propogate to mapped network drives don't have anything to grab on to.
I haven't gotten any intruder alerts from comtun so I can't judge
effectiveness yet. So far in 5 years we've had one virus incident and I was
able to confine it to two PC's on the network. We've been Lucky. Anytime,
anyone reports, unusual system behavior I run a scan, usually PCcillin's web
scan, or I scan their drives from a workstation that has an install.
(Management HATES buying software). A cost/benefit analysis says that Trend
works for us. Ideally, all the systems should be protected. If you're
trying to do things on the cheap, Look at Zone Alarm and see if it works for
you, www.zonelabs.com. I really like the program and was annoyed when the
program developed a memory leak. I've been using the free scan because it
was a tool I could grab quickly. I'm looking at using the corpoate edition
of PCCillin.

We are using McAfee as well. My biggest problem was trying to get push
technology to work on the clients. I finally got fed up and have scheduled
the server to download the Superdat each night and if I notice a new one I
update the login script to run the superdat silent upon login. Prior to
this I had clients with outdated definitions but now they are all current.
How do you push out your definitions?

Jim,

Our server downloads the latest definition each night. Workstations are
automated to pick it up from the server during the night. Viruscan ver 4.51
picks up the latest scan engine along with the latest definition when it
does its updates every night. Previous versions required running the
superdats. I'm in the process of upgrading all ws's to ver 4.51. -Gary

I know some here and myself as well have referred to Norton as a "Virus",
but we are now using Corp. Edition 7.6 and it works wonderfully.
It is very easy to maintain and if you have NT or higher on your pc's you
would never have to leave your office to maintain or install. I recommend
the "Virus".

I know I'm late to the party with my response, but I wanted to make sure
that you knew about McAfee ASaP. We have used McAfee products for the last
five years here and never (knock on wood) had an infection. Last year when
we renewed our contract with McAfee they set us up with their ASaP product
and I LOVE it! The desktop setup is done via a web link (which the users
could do themselves if I trusted them, but I don't) and that's the last time
I've touched it.

Here's what else I love about the software:
The updates happen automatically (including the scanning engine as well as
the virus signature files).
It updates a secure web site when it finds and/or cleans any virus.
The website allows me to categorize computers by department and generate
reports.
The users cannot disable the program (that's my favorite feature!)

I think that we paid somewhere in the neighborhood of $75/computer for a
three year period. They recently added a couple of new features, one of
which was to allow it to run on computers that don't have access to the
internet as long as there is one computer on the same network that does have
internet access and is running ASaP. I only wish all the software we run
worked as well and with as little maintenance as this software!

Jim,

Our server downloads the latest definition each night. Workstations are
automated to pick it up from the server during the night. Viruscan ver
4.51
picks up the latest scan engine along with the latest definition when it
does its updates every night. Previous versions required running the
superdats. I'm in the process of upgrading all ws's to ver 4.51. -Gary

We are using McAfee as well. My biggest problem was trying to get push
technology to work on the clients. I finally got fed up and have
scheduled
the server to download the Superdat each night and if I notice a new one I
update the login script to run the superdat silent upon login. Prior to
this I had clients with outdated definitions but now they are all current.
How do you push out your definitions?

I haven't heard anyone mention McAfee. I've used it for 2 years. After a
painful learning curve during the initial installation, it has been very
good for the most part. Anyone heard anything different about it?
